Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee Spotted!

I believe Toyota will use their own diesel engine. They will offer a diesel soon, no doubt, as they do in the rest of the world. ULSD will not make it unaffordable, just look at Germany, where ULSD has been in use for several years. DIesels are encouraged in that country and are considered the "base" engine in some of their vehicles. Toyota uses their own inline 6 24 valve diesel and gasoline engine in their forklifts. It is around 4. 5 liter and is supposedly what they use in a medium truck in other parts of the world. Not turbocharged in the forklift, but a well built engine. Would be great in a pickup, but would not touch the preformance of the Cummins. I just wish the little ricers would offer a small truck (around the S-10 and Ranger size) with a diesel. Maybe after ULSD comes out here?

The problem is not the ULSD, it's the fact that in this country diesel engines must pass exactly the same strict emissions requirements as gas engines. In Europe, diesels must meet a different emissions standard than gas vehicles - each type of engine has emissions laws that are tailored to its particular strong suits.

If they get NOx and PM emissions down to the level of gassers, diesels will be considerably cleaner overall with less unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.

I don't buy it... If all of that stuff is true, that would be going against how toyota has traditionally done business. They have NEVER offered many engine or model choices. Coming out with 2 new diesels and a couple of new gas engines all at once sounds fishy to me. I really can't see them using Cummins when they have Hino, and the class leading power REALLY doesn't sound like Toyota. I would think a diesel w/ something like 250hp and 450Tq would be about what they will have. They have always marched to their own beat, and I just can't see them going head to head with the big 3. People buy Toyota because they are well built, high quality vehicles, not because you get more IMO. .

I had the opprotunity to go to Tokyo last dec. and let me tell you that they have some pretty awesome diesels. Big, Med. , small trucks and they are no way dogs. Those people know only one speed and that is WOT! I mean there is some really big trucks out there and not having any trouble hanging with the cars. They do have diesels in the Tundras also. They have them in almost every platform. If they jump in our market, they will not be new to it, maybe our EPA, not Tech. One thing I saw when I was there was they pride themselves on is building the tallest, biggest and the fastest. They will totally level a entire area if needed to do it.

somehow i don't see toyota making a full sized pickup that can handle 1300lbs wet engine hanging over the front axle... [/QUOTE]

Well believe it, Toyota is going to build a big heavy truck to compete with the big three and they will offer a diesel.

We know that they are building an HD pickup, but I have heard conflicting stories about a diesel option as I mentioned before. As a life long fan and owner of Toyotas, I personally find it hard to believe that they will be much competition to the big 3 in terms of capabilities, power, ect. If it is in fact true, these numbers that are being thrown around (700 lbs tq), then they will likely be way behind if we still have 2 yrs to go before their release and the power wars are still raging. I predict it will be a very nice truck, but I feel that it will be another Tundra so to speak, a "one size fits all" that only comes in 2 sizes. .

toyota made a 1 ton diesel a while back too it looked just like the regular truck but it had duals on it u-haul used the 1 ton toys but they were the gas version

Don't get me wrong on what i seen in Japan, I was ichin like a hound dog to have just one day with the cummins there. I was just impressed with all of their diesels. One thing I did notice, even thier buses all had manuals in them. It makes you wonder if it just for fuel milage or they don't have much for autos. in thier larger applications.

Have they actually said this?

Yes, I got this from a very reliable source. They will make a 3/4 ton and a one ton DRW and they will have a diesel available. That all I know about the diesel, don't know who will make it. :)
