Truck started acting up on the way home today. Dead pedal (or at least 90% of the pedal is dead), stumbling. Check codes with Smarty:APPS, Turbo Overboost, 0602 which has been there since the Smarty, and the 1693 companion code. I am thinking the APPS but am confused about yhe overboost code, expecially since the Smarty does boost fooling. Anyway as soon as I can I am going to swap the APPS unless someone points me otherwise. The truck has 120,000 miles so I figure I am due at this point. Runs fine with cruise control though, just a little tricky to shift!

Anyway, is the APPS available at NAPA and can someone point to good easy to follow installation instructions?

Thanks for all your help!

Alright. I replaced the TPS with one from Blue Chips and nothing is changed. Now what? Code is 0122.

Thanks.

P0122 (M) Accelerator Position Sensor (APPS)

Signal Voltage Too Low

APPS voltage input below the minimum acceptable

voltage.

Did you adjust the new APPS when you installed it? If not that could be your problem. Also did you do an APPS reset after the install? It should be done as well. Everything here seems to be pointing toward an APPS issue...

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I managed to get the voltage at around . 63. The instructions say . 6 to . 67. I also did the whole remove battery cables and reattach after a while and turn key on and and push pedal down and release thing a few times. Would a bad MAP sensor throw everything off and maybe not be as noticable with the cruise set?

Also, could a wire be broke that attaches the APPS to the computer? Where do they run to check resistance and see if that is the case, or would it just not work at all? I checked and the APPS is getting 5 volts like my book says it should and the ground is good. I am at a loss!

Thanks

Dan

when you adjusted the apps, was the engine responsive to the throttle command. Did you try and check the voltage with the truck running. move the throttle, and see if the voltage is changing, if it is, is the rpm changing? I think in the post I put up earlier, there is a post in there that tells you which wire it is at the ecm. you could check that and see if the voltage is gettting back to the ecm. pm me if you want to talk.

Thanks for the input. I am going to try and trouble shoot it some today. I will post what I find out if anything. I very much appreciate the help.

does anyone know of a codebook, or where i can find a definition of all theses acronyms? i'm not to sharp on these pickups yet, but am learning, MAPS, TPS, APPS mean nothing to me. i did a search onsite, but just turned up the same acronyms, not definitions

It said . 60 to . 67 volts on the instuction sheet at idle. I tested the sensor today and got 3. 7 volts with the pedal to the floor. Does that sound right? I tested the ground and that is good and the sensor is getting 5 volts like my Haynes repair manual says it should have. I just bought my digital meter and I am not to good at the electical stuff but I did notice that it bounces back and forth between reading volts and millivolts sometimes, maybe that is what you're reading, 6 volts seems high since I think only 5 are supposed to come into it. I could be wrong. The sensor I took off said . 58 volts for the idle adjustment. Like I said I could be very wrong so don't hesitate to tell me so. I am learning here the hard way. If I don't have this figured out by next Monday the 30th, I will take it into the local diesel shop and turn it over to them. That is the first day they have available since Thanksgiving is next week. Fortunatly I can borrow a car from my dad and I don't need the truck for a living like so many here do.

Thanks for the replys and the help and Happy Thanksgiving!

I noticed you bought it from Blue Chip. Have you called them & talked to them about the problem. Chip Fisher is real good about helping people who have bought products from him & are having problems.

Well, I got home this morning and tore into the truck a little. After leaving the battery cables disconnected for the past couple of days, I pulled the wire harness for the computer and cleaned the contacts and dielectric greased them. I checked continuity between all wires from the APPS to the CPU, all were good. At this point, I reconnected the CPU harness as well as the APPS sensor. After reconnecting the battery cables, I did the APPS reset procedure (Turn key on, push pedal down, turn key off). I then started the truck. It was resposive to the throttle for about 3 seconds when it went right back to what is was before. I am stumped and starting to suspect the ECM. The 0122 code would not even clear with the SMARTY, the code came back without starting the truck. Any Ideas???

Thanks,

Dan

Update: Truck is still broke. I emailed Bob Wagner with SMARTY, and described the problem. He is sending me an ECM to try and see if that helps so if you are reading this, THANKS BOB! Also, I spoke today with bromano676 and he gave some other pointers and things to try, so THANKS BROMANO676! In the mean time, if anybody else has an ideas, I would appreciate it. I will update if anything else works. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

I wish I still had access to AllData. The trouble shooting trees for the DTC's were excellent. You may still have a bad wire between point A and B. It is also not unheard of to have a new sensor that is bad out of the box.

It's alive! At least for now until I send the ECM back to Bob Wagner on Monday. I received the ECM from Bob on Saturday, hocked it up and the truck was running good. I even ran it around the block a few times just to make sure and all seemed good. Now, I just need to find a good place to get an ECM for a resonable price. I will check with Bob, but when I spoke to him on the phone it didn't seem like he had any extras laying around and the one he sent me he needs back so if anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks to all who helped me track down this problem, computer issues are always the hardest to diagnose.

Thanks,

Dan Knoch
