Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5spd shifter question

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Uneven rear brake shoe wear

hey guys, i've got a 98 12valve and i want to install a switch to lock the converter, for two reasons. first, i want to install an exhaust brake( it's an auto so i know i have to install 60# springs too). second, i'm so sick and tired of the transmission slipping in and out of lockup. i've read all the posts, bought a new tps, reamed out the mounting holes to no avail. the only thing i can think to do is to put in a bypass switch for when i'm on the highway. my question is this- i know there is an old issue that describes how to do this but why can't i just run a wire from the tps feed (5 volts) to a switch on the dash and on the other side i would hook up a resistor to drop the voltage to 2 volts, let's say, and run that line back to the return line on the tps? i've taken readings on my tps going down the highway and the converter seems to come out of lockup at about 1. 69 volts. i would just be bypassing the tps by parallelling a resistor in line with it. would this work? any input would be appreciated. thanks rob

Robert, If your T. P. S. is/has failed or failing, then you can probably help with your circuit. However, since you have replaced the sensor, it may not help. I went thru the same problems recently and thought the same as you about a circuit to bypass the controls. Now, if you want to take control of the trans. in that manner, you should find the recent thread that explains more about the wiring and controls for the trans. I don't know about the RE transmissions, but the RH can be controlled with two simple switches. The RH trans. has one, three wire plug on the side. One wire is 12 volts switched with the key, one wire can be grouned to lock the convertor and the other can be grounded to engage O/D. Find the thread concerning using a 47RH behind a 4BT engine. Hope that helps.

A couple of things here,

1. if you want to lock the converter you need to supply a ground to the transmission, I believe the instructions are on TST's web site.

2. If you have to ream out the holes to get the voltage right then the throttle linkage is out of adjustment..... just did this very thing.

3. Test your TPS with it off the truck with the key on, you should be able to get it down to about . 3 volts measuring the middle wire and grounding on the Battery or something if you can only get it to 1 volt or so then it's worn out of limits..... did this to with the above fix. And double check WOT after and adjustment along with the TV valve on the transmission

Make sure that the return spring and the TV cable is hooked up (and not broke).

I had to replace my spring and reattach the cable on one end when it came off. Caused really soft shifts and the TCC would slip. No longer does now.
