I ran the overhead, replaced the overflow valve. The engine sounds great. Replaced leaking valve cover gaskets. I took the truck for a ride everything was fine leaks corrected. Let truck cool down washed engine. Took it for a ride to dry out everyhing. Had a water in fuel alert it went away. Truck started hunting in and out of overdrive. Cleaned the TPS sensor with contact cleaner it was cruddy and damp. Is it toast or could this be something else?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

My stock TPS has 130k on it with electronic cleaner doses at every oil change. Works for me. Your problem may have stemmed from some stray water.

Don, the TPS is somewhat adjustable, if I remember right it is supposed to put out 1. 2 - 1. 5 volts in the idle position. The only time my TPS has been off was to replace the throttle cable, just reinstalled it in the original position and it measured right. . There is very little adjustment, so you can't go too far wrong. Check this out for better info. One trick this link doesn't mention is to use a paper clip in the TPS connecter if the probes on your voltmeter are too fat or short to reach the contacts.

Illflem:

I think you are correct, I took the truck this morning and it shifts perfectly. I did do a very good wash of the engine compartment after changing the valve cover gaskets.

You mentioned that you cleaned the TPS at every oil change. I was wondering if you have noticed any difference in performance by either rotating the TPS forward or aft when you reinstall it. I am of the impression that it needs to be in a relaxed position with the throttle at idle position.
Thanks for the reply

I don't know if this makes any sense or not. The other day I was having trouble with 4-3 downshift under light throttle. I was about to replace the TPS after testing it as per Illflems suggestion, it tested . 75-. 80 volts.
I soaked it real good with CRC and after a couple of hours I reinstalled it and was getting . 97-1. 2 volts at idle position. Ok that looks good, Wot about 3. 5-3. 9 volts. Went for a ride early on same 4-3 downshift happened twice and went away. About 40 miles later in traffic it started doing the bad shift again.
I must confess I turned the AFC to inrease response when all of this began in the first place. So I turned it back about 10 clicks and the problem has not returned. It is currently doing great.
Does this make any sense I ask again?\
