Transmission is changing in and out of gear. With and without overdrive. Can some one tell me where it is located and what to do before I take it to the dealer?

99 3500 Turbo Diesel

In the front of the motor right above the crank pulley.

There is a slot in the balancer wheel that it reads,

That's the engine speed sensor.

The TPS is located on the left side of the engine near the front. Look for the throttle cable and the cruise cable. There is a cover (or something) covering it up and a 24 (too many) valve truck.

Go read the "lockup problem" post in the 911 section and try to recalibrate your TPS. Sometime it works and sometimes it does not.

RWestbrook,

Now that you have been informed where the tps and ess is check both out especially ground and connector on ess(engine speed sensor).

Trans fluid temp sensor could alos be acting up. ( but problem is usually tps).

Torque converter lock/unlock

It sounds like you are having the same problem I had. My torque converter would lock and unlock going with or without cruise. Service Bulletins said ECM and PCM should be flashed. This corrected some problems I was having but local stealer finally replaced TPS under warranty and no more problems. It is on top left front of engine. Oo. Good luck
