question:



when i hooked up bill k's noise filter. his instructions said to hook one wire (white) to the orange (signal) wire coming from the tps and the other wire (black) to the chassis ground.



i read once from the dodgeram.org about "adjusting" the tps and they had a blurb at the end that states:



"I did some experimenting and found that an electrolytic capacitor (440 microFarads, 35 Vdc) with the negative side connected to the SIG RETURN wire and the positive side hooked to the TPS SIG wire gave me absolutely *troublefree* operation! Even though my TPS is basically trashed, the capacitor filters out almost all of the electrical noise, and my auto transmission once again shifts like factory-new! "





my question is: so how do these things hook up?



i am assuming that bill's noise filter is just a capacitor in a box with 2 leads.

Scott the instructions are pretty clear. Electrolytic capacitors have two leads, one is usually identified by a stripe on the side of the positive lead and/or a +

Scotch-Locs may be the ticket. You may want to strip some insulation from some scrap wire to slip over the capacitor leads as they will come bare.

kondolay's instructions go from the signal to ground.

The TPS signal (orange) wire connects to PCM pin 22 and the TPS 5 volt (violet) wire connects to pin 6.

The grounded (black) Sig Return or Reference wire connects to pin 4.

On my 94 there is a second violet wire going to pin 42 which is for transmission temperature.



I can't really see what would be gained by connecting a capacitor between the 5 volt and Signal wires on the TPS.



Either the signal wire or the 5 volt wire, or both, can have induced voltages or spikes on them.

The signal voltage is the one that has to be clean and, in my opinion, is the one that should have the capacitor between it and ground.

A second capacitor connected between the 5 volt wire and ground certainly would not hurt anything.



Connect the positive lead on each capacitor to its respective wire with the negative leads tied together and grounded.

well i have bill's capacitor box connected per his instructions. i have replaced the 5 volt and signal wire with shielded wire. i didn't see another 5v purple wire on the connector closest to the engine. i must have the right one. however, i don't have any gears only 3rd. and i don't have a tach or cruise.



any help is appreciated.

Scott,

Check your purple wire and see if you have 5 volts.

You said that you may have cut the wrong purple wire. The one you should be using is connected to pin 6 of the PCM and must have 5 volts on it with the ignition switch on.

Also, make sure PCM pin 4 is grounded.

attention: anyone reading this thread... ... howard's pin locations are for his 94... ... . NOT good for my 96.

I apologize for the confusion that resulted because the pin numbers for the TPS on the 94 are different from the 96.

Fortunately it didn't take you long to recognize that.



I am certainly pleased that you solved the problem with the speed sensor and that getting the TPS wiring out of the harness took care of the TC shifting problem.
