Low idle speed screw adjustment suggestion

Brake system question

I was driving down the road yesterday with my cruise set, and without warning my cruise kicked off and the truck downshifted into drive. The weird thing was that my speedometer immediately went to 0 mph. After about 2 mins, everything was fine? What the heck? I am supposed to make a trip with the truck and would like to get this figured out?

TPS searches in the archives are not helping with diagnosing.

Sounds like a loose wire to the speed sensor, or possibly dirt, in the TPS. Check your conections to the speed sensor, TPS, and cruise control. If you have 3. 54s, yuo can still go 60mph, and only drop 1-2MPG.

Did your air conditioner quit working when this happened? If the computer takes a dump, the cruise control, battery charging loop, air conditioning can all quit working. Hopefully it is something like the speed sensor causing the problem and not the computer. Also, like Daniel suggested, check connections. Take the main one on the fire wall apart and reconnect it. There has been some problems in this area as well.

If it is the computer, you can get a rebuilt one from Dodge for about $250 or so. My son had the one in his 92 go out. The problem is it took several weeks to get one made and delivered.

Check the speed sensor wires closely where they come down along the side of the trans. I had mine rubbed threw about 6 months ago.

speedo went to zero

My speed sender on the transmission got loose and caused a similar problem. Be sure it is tight and that the wires are secure.

Thanks guys. The way my luck has been going this last month (lawn mower on the way out, girlfriends car destroyed the timing belt etc. . ) I was worried. I thought that it may be something more. The transmission was recently rebuilt and that would be the most logical place to check, (speed sensor wires).

Yup, lotta shops will do a half arsed job on these older trucks just because they are old, and thus, we either arent important enough for them to care, or we dont care; if we did care, we'd be driving a brand new pickup, instead of something 14 years old.

dpuckett, I agree. Sad day, and a sad commentary, when people can't appreciate the regard one shows for their stuff regardless of age.

We are moving too fast in a direction no one told me about. Maybe that is why I have a 11 year old truck?

Most of the time these same shops do it to all auto's they work on. Not just our older trucks. Sloppy work in shops is a major problem. It has been sence the auto mechanic trade was started. About the only way to combat it is to tell everyone about the bad work and let them decide if they want that type of work done on their car/truck. After a while the company dies.
