Think my TPS going out again. 95 with 94K and having the drop out of lockup problems. Have a service manual and in chapter 14 it says center wire should be showing 1V +/- . 2V and mine is showing . 65V. Tried adjusting per manual and can get voltage up in . 78 to . 85 range, but it won't hold, drops back to . 65V. Reading manual, it doesn't appear that difficult to change. Anyone have experience changing and what should I be aware of, or would I be better off letting dealer do it. Trying to save a few, since they want $170. 00 for the part.

Charlie,
I'd try a Cummins dealer before I bought the TPS. The one here only wanted about $75 for the thing. I would do is take it off and clean it with some electric cleaner first. I did that to mine and haven'e had a problem since. If you do need to replace it, it 's only two bolts holding the thing on so it should be a piece of cake.

I repleced mine about two years ago. You are having exact same symptons I had. I got mine from NAPA for about $80 at the time. It is very easy to do.

Thanks for the rapid replies. I will check NAPA and Cummins. Need to get this changed fairly quickly as I'm running down to the coast next Wednesday. I had done a search and someone said that Wrenchhead.com had them for $68. 00, but price there now is $146. 00.
Againg thanks

An old thread mentioned the dealer wanted 2x or 3x for the same part from Cummins so DON'T go to the dealer except as a last resort.

Charlie,
Also had the pesky random TC unlock like you.
Upon advice of fellow members, replaced TPS
last week. Now 300 miles later-no more problem. #ad
Dealers wanted $198 and $170 sales
final. Cummins wanted $135 and parts guy gave
me booster club discount to $120 and said if
doesn't fix it bring it back. #ad

Called my local Cummins dealer today and was going to put my truck in for 100k service and replace the TPS. He said they didn't and couldn't get the part. It was an OEM piece and had to come stright from the dealer.

My local cummins is an idiot.

Wade, I think your right about the dealer. The cummins dealer should be able to get it. I gave my local Cummins dealer the part number and they found it.
My Dodge dealer wanted $175. 00 for the part.

just checked with my dealer, list is 170 my cost is 127. 5 will carol check how much they were in the past i always thought they were 70-80 bucks part number is 4874412

Just replaced it yesterday and seems to be running great now. Cost was 170 for me less whatever discount I get. I forget. But even at 170, I'll pay it becasue I don't know how many times I told the dealer the symptoms and they said it wasn't the TPS.

Ya know what really makes me mad. Is when a customer comes in and explains the problem and points them in the right direction of fixing that problem and they blow you off. Amnd even when you ask them to replace the part and if it doesn't work you pay for it yourself, they still won't do it.

I've had excellent results just cleaning my TPS with electronic cleaner,120k on the original one. Cleaning it is now part of my matenence, every other oil change.

Had problems getting that little bugger. Located one a Mopar4less (1-800-748-2139) for $139. 00 shipping included. Came in while on vacation, went to put on this morning and throttle cable was frayed and three strands broken. Put on TPS and took truck to dealer for throttle cable. Haven't been able to test on open road yet, but idle voltage was . 947 without adjustment (old one was . 678 after adjustement). Check those throttle cables. Mine was fine last Tuesday with no visiable problems, 2 driving days and 1400 miles later I had a big problem. If you have a problem or have already replaced yours, I would encourge you to contact NHTSA www.nhtsa.com and fill out a report like I did.

Does anybody have a link to show where the TPS is located?(I know it's around the fuel pump area) I have the ABS, so there is little room to see things on this side of the engine. TIA

Hey Illflem do you have any idea what that part # is. My new one as well as old one are both black. Part # on both is 3930318. This was latest part # according to Cumberland Cummins here in the Derby. They didn't have one, so wound up getting one from www.mopar4less.com and they had the same part #. Just curious if they had a later and improved part #.

Charlie, never replaced mine so I don't have a number for you. Mine was stock white in '95. I'd sure like to tear a failed TPS apart and see what actually goes wrong,if anyone has one E-mail and we'll work it out.
