I was reading the latest edition of TDR and they were talking about the TPS and how the torque converter would unlock with minimal throttle when in OD and OD off. They said to use a computer cleaner and spray in the shaft and work the throttle. Am i right? Where is the shaft and do i need to remove anything to get to it?

The TPS is the back box on the side of the linkage mess that throttle cable goes to. On the back of it you will see a shaft. Just drown that with contact cleaner and work the linkage back and forth. If you do that every oil change it should keep working right.

That it does, my 95 had the constant hunt from lockup to unlock till I soaked the thing with electrical contact cleaner. Works like a charm now. Just soak it and go for a drive. Cheers Mike

And that's why people have to continously douse it with electrical cleaner. The only thing keeping the outside elements from the TPS contacts is grease on the bushing and shaft. Spraying electrical cleaner will help in the beginning but does not fix it in the long run.

Joe,

Not saying that spraying it with the contact cleaner doesn't fix the problem. It just that every so often you have to go back and do it again. Not sure what the short run is but I haven't touched mine in 70,000 miles. Now with my luck it will crap out today!!!

Well I had to revisit this issue once again.

My Tps started acting up the other day, and I was about to replace it, Until I read on here some of the fixes that people had done. I have been through this once before and had been having only a few incidents where the transmission would drop out of overdrive. I removed and lubed the brake light switch and reinstalled it. No problems for about 700 miles. Then I went on a 250 mile trip, and it started acting up again. I unplugged it and checked the contacts, lubed them with household dielectric grease ( vaseline) no change. Still hunting. Came back to the house and hosed the spring behing the TPS down with a goodly amount of Blue Liquid Wrench, and let it sit overnight thinking if it acts up in the morning, I'll just get another one.

Well I drove the truck for the last three days without a single glitch in the shifting pattern. I can say that if you are starting to get a hard shift from 1st to second then you might as well lube the TPS Shaft, because the OD hunting problem is comming. Not to metion the hard shift can't be good for things in the transmission.

I hope this may help others

Good Luck

Don

The liquid wrench seems to be the remedy. No indication of any problem shifting or staying in overdrive.

Good Luck
