Hello All,

I have been presented a good deal on a 2017. It is a limited with the Asisin, air auto level, and 3.42 gears. How will the truck tow compared to a 2012 with the 800TQ, 68RFE, 3.73. Will the 900 TQ motor pull the same, better, worse with the 3.42? Sorry I just don't know the gearing in the Aisian or how to calculate the gears in general. I know that the higher number is a lower gear and better for towing.

would the towing be any better?

The Aisin has a little bit lower first and second gear but a larger split between 2nd and 3rd compared with the 68RFE. The extra power and torque will likely overcome this difference between the two rear axle ratios. I imagine it will tow at least as good as your truck, probably better.

I believe you will find folks responding that you can tow in 5th to get a similar 373 experience and the 900 torque will tow like a freight train. *First gear is quick to shift but better geared for taking off from a stop than a 68rfe. *Be warned though, that the Aison has been plagued with the dead pedal issue. *Some trucks have it and some don't. *Drive that truck in all conditions and particularly, where you start from a stop, then slow as if for traffic, and then floor it. *If you don't get the 3-7 second delay in response, or any delay for that matter, continue on with your negotiations. *If you have the delay, run as fast as you can away from the thing. *There is no good fix for the problem. *Great trans with EPA and FCA limitations built into it.

I tow a 16K 5th wheel with a 2015 385/865/Aisin at combined weight of just over 24K. I pulls like a freight train. I lock out 6th gear and tow at around 60MPH at 1750 RPM. The 3:42 gears work very well in this setup. It is a real freeway cruiser, 80MPH is 1750 PRMs in 6th. I do not have the dead pedal issue. Some believe driving style brings on the condition. If someone has a 3-7 delay they should demand a buy back and file with www.safercar.gov. SNOKING

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I was thinking it would tow similar. I really like how hard the exhaust brake bites in the 2017. It is almost as good as the Pac Brake in my 07 6 speed.

But, if I am not gaining anything while towing not sure the expense is worth it. Basically the same interior, nicer dash/gauge cluster and such though. I get the same info with my Edge insight.

I knew, I would have to go to a Dually to get higher GVWR and at least 3.73s.

I had a 2012 w/ 3.73's and 68rfe. Now have a 2015 with 3.42's and Aisin. I can't say I notice any significant difference towing up to 14k.

And I should say, when I say towing it is starting and maintaining speed. *Stopping anther important aspect, *I assume is better to the more aggressive exhaust brake.

A simple math equation can give you a relative comparison.

900 lb-ft x 3.42 = 3078
800 lb-ft x 3.73 = 2984

So in essence, the new truck gives you about 3% more grunt to the ground cruising in 4th, with all other things equal. As others mention, the Aisin gives you better off-the-line pull in the lower gears, so that will help get you up to speed much better:

900 lb-ft x 3.42 x 3.75 (first gear) = 11542
800 lb-ft x 3.73 x 3.23 (first gear) = 9638

That's a 19% improvement at launch.

If you need a DRW, then you'd be better off with the 3:73 but should be 4:10. Lots of members here swear by their 3:42 diffs. I had a 2014 2500 @ 10K GVW with 3:42 and it scrambled the diff at 14K miles. Ya, it wont cruise at low RPMS, but it's not a station-wagon either. JMHO

2nd - 1.84:1
3rd - 1.41:1
4th - 1.00:1
5th - 0.82:1
6th - 0.63:1

Aisin AS69RC ratios:
1st - 3.75:1
2nd - 2.00:1
3rd - 1.34:1
4th - 1.00:1
5th - 0.77:1
6th - 0.63:1
