Track Bar Anwser ?

I called Auto Tire and Parts and got them to give me the phone # for Moog . I called and asked them about the lifetime warranty trackbar and they told me it has a GVW limit of 6000 lbs. after that no warranty.

Good thing my truck only weighs 5892 lbs

Hopefully with the beefed up socket end you'll never need the warranty.

Bunch of Morons @ Autozone & Advance

AutoZone sez they do not carry Federal-Mogul/Moog/TRW Track bar DS1413. Unbelievable.



Advance Auto shows 1 in each local store. Problem is employee's can't find them.



I have a loose NAPA T-Bar, but its the light duty style. Only lasted 2 years/15,000 miles. It has a lifetime warranty, but I figured I would upgrade to the revised HD model.

Moog, TRW and Federal Mogul are some of the top names in quality parts available to the buying public.

Bill I have to wonder if Napa may have upgraded to a heavier socket also. After all how many free warranty bars do you have to give out before you decide it's time for some redesigning? Only problem is finding someone at Napa that knows anything.

Brain dead again. It was Advance Auto where I got the track bar. I said Autozone. Anyway, in my case, the store had it in stock and knew where it was.

Finally located a Federal/Mogul DS1413 at Advance Auto. Just over $100. The ball joint was tight when I took the bar out. I had to put it in the vise and squeeze it to get the movement I saw (up & down) when it on the truck (see the pic). The ball stud went into the socket about . 080. It sure as hell looked like alot more when it was mounted. The truck drives tighter now.

I was wondering about Napa's T-bar too. I stopped in and asked to see the newest p/n 272-4229. It looked the same as the one I have. No noticable difference.



When I laid my old Napa 272-4229 (bought 8/99) next to the Federal/Mogul DS1413, I didn't notice any difference. Nothing.



I measured the O. D of the ball socket on both bars. The DS1413 was about . 050 wider than the "regular" Napa bar (see pic). If they strengthened the ball end like they claim, it can't be seen.

I put a Lukes on my ds 1413. The failure at 5k miles was not wear on the ball stud, seat or nylon saddle but they have a spring loading the nylon saddle that rests on the steel cover. The spring had softened and had also worn into the steel cover to give . 100 lash in the joint in 5k mi. The ball stud joint is larger than stock but same design and materials. JUNK



Edit: after one day with the Lukes on it had just about rubbed a hole in the front diff cover. On my 2k there is not sufficient clearance between the cover and link below the bolt line. This will not be apparent during install as the axle must travel about 3 - 4" up. No I had not been off road, just to the other side of town and back on freeway.

Shooter, That is what happened to my T-bar. I was dumbfounded when I removed it and found the joint was as tight as new. Only until I put it in a vice I found the play I saw on the truck.

I wanted to bring this back up. I went to a local place I like to get some work done and want to replace the track bar and they recommended the Moog "heavy duty" bar. They said $229 installed. I have to get the part # of the "heavy duty" he was talking about. Didnt think the price was bad installed until I found out I can get the bar for $100. I am going to ask him for parts and labor break down.

Pricey install considering it only takes less than half an hour, you don't even need to jack the truck up. I switched mine over in less than 10 minutes.

Also you need to remember that "they're" price and "your" price are much differant when puchacing parts. They will charge you "list" price for the part, which is usually much higher, when you buy the bar, look on your recipt, it should show the list price as well. (from a good parts store)

Yep, to a point. You'll need a BFH, (big F'n hammer) to get the old bar loose from the joint side, other than that, simple enough for the basic backyard wrencher.

So are track bars and stabilizer shocks the common failures? What about the rest of the front end? How well does it hold up.



Steering is getting a little sloppy. Trying to determine if the complete rebuild is the way to go, or just do the trackbar, shock, and alighment.



Notes, pulls a little to one side, but not very bad. Does not seem to pull or track wierd in grooves, etc. Last set of tires wore evenly.

I just got off the phone pricing these silly things and here is what I came up with.



Carquest selling Moog $181. 13

NAPA selling Federal-Mogul $239. 09:--)

Advance Auto Parts has two manufacturers: Mcquay Norris and TRW, with the prices of $152. 99 and $99. 99, respectively.



So which one do you go with? BTW, all of these had the same part number. I will probably go with Carquest just because AAP is 35 miles away. Forget NAPA they aren't even competitive in terms of pricing.

Napa may have given you the list price, they have a tendency to do that over the phone. If you set up an easy to do account with them you get 20% off almost everything.
