2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Trackbar?

I know I should know this but what exactly is the track bar and where is it? I would have assumed the trackbar(s) are the two structures that run for and aft from the frame to the axle to set the location of the axle. But in reading numerous posts it now appears the track bar is a single bar running from ? to ? Just think, after you set me straight I'll be that much less dumb.

The track bar is in front of the axle, and runs from the passanger side on the axle to the drivers side on the frame.
