My friend is looking to trade differentials w/ anyone who has 3:73 gears. The differentials that he has are off a late 2001 with disc all around and 3:54 gears. He says he is going to be towing a heavy load. He doesn't want to pay to swap gears if someone wants to trade. The diffs only have 75,000 miles and the oil was changed at 50,000. They are being used in the truck currently so it would be a side by side swap somewhere. Local trade only for equal low miles. Located just north of San Francisco.

Just so you are aware, the 2nd Gens had either 3. 54 or 4. 10 gear ratios from the factory. If you found a truck with 3. 73, it was because somebody paid for the ratio change.

I went from 3. 54 to 4. 10 & it works well for pulling. Tell him to ante up.

3. 73's not available in 2nd gens. Besides, I dont see how the labor involved in changing from a 3. 54 to a 3. 73 is worth it.

There would be a 110 rpm difference on a manual, and a 100rpm difference on an auto. (31" tires used for the calcs)

He'd gain almost exactly the same result by going down 1" in tire size.

Just my . 02.

My buddy just got an 06 with 3. 73s and he wants 3. 54. Not sure if it's a direct swap but at least everyone's in California :)

Completely different axle setup at least in the rear. Not saying it couldn't be done if your into fabbing. I have 3. 54 and I tow 12-13k. I think the 3. 54 is perfect. I use 5th alot run around 2100 rpm or so on the small two lanes. Go to 6th when I get on the 65+ roads.

The 3rd gens have American axles and the 2nd gens have Dana axles, not interchangeable but would nice if they were.

I was also looking to do a gear swap to 4. 10's but only one person was close to me that wanted to swap and he had a 2wd :(

I did the 3. 54 to 4. 10 swap with a young man out of New Mexico about a year ago. The change was tremendous. One point to consider is that on a 3500 it raises your GVW from 16K to 19K. I weighed mine (loaded) and it's right at 19K. So for me it was a good swap in that aspect. I lost a little mpg but the power train doesn't work as hard now. Last thing I'd like to add to this is that with 4. 10s I tend to go slower than before. At 60 mph with 354s I was at 1600 rpms (approx) now with the 4. 10 at 60 I'm spinning closer to the 1900 mark.

I didnt know you wanted 4. 10's Dean!!! Josh Teager (sp?) had a dually with 4. 10's and wanted 3. 54's, I couldnt find anyone that wanted his 4. 10's!!! In fact, I believe he is the person Bart is talking about in the post after yours!!!!

Doh!!

3. 54's were alright with my power upgrades, but after switching to 19. 5 wheels I think the 4. 10's would be much better. I think there was one other guy somewhat close but he didnt have rear disc brakes and wanted to do an axle swap, I'm not giving up my discs!
