I am headed to the dealer to look at a 2003 HO 48RE Laramie 4x4 LWB I am taking my 2001. 5 4x4 dually how big of an insult should I be ready to take on this, I have heard guys say that they got killed on their trade. IM just curious what to expect and also if anyone knows of fair dealers that will give you what your trade is worth in Northern Texas or Southern Oklahoma.

I had an 02 4X4, ex. cab 36000 miles, that the dealer offered me 21K. I was told ahead of time they would offer way under what I could sell it for. Then I was then told that with the sales tax savings I would be getting around 23K for the truck. I sold it in three days for 25,5K.

The 03 is in storage that last I was told and waiting to be shipped.

Good luck,

Jim

You will always do better to sell a vehicle in really good shape on your own. Most dealers will tell you that. You will normally get a low price for the trade and a great discount on the new truck or the other way around, not both. The dealer will have to make money on the trade and put some kind of a warranty on it.

I hate to sell anything so I traded, I got an reasonable and honest price for my 98. 5 and a decent price on the new truck. The bottom line was within a couple of hundred buck from what I figured, I went no further. They had my old truck for three months before they sold it for less than I would have asked for it. The truck was probably the best, low mileage 98. 5 around. You may have a real nice truck, but you still have to have a buyer for it.

Kevin, my . 02. Over the past few weeks I've tried to buy an 03 3500 SRW. I have an 01 ETH 4x4 86k miles. Trade in offers ranged from $17,500 to $22,000. Depends on the dealer, what they have sitting on their lot for used diesels and how badly they want to sell a new one. The dealer who offered 22k was on a 42k truck and we ended up $1700 apart. They wouldn't move and neither would I so I'll drive the 01 for a while.

I think I got a fair dael when I traded my '99 for the '03. Only reason I traded rather than sell outright was the sales tax - I saved the sales tax on $21K. Don't know what the the dealer got for the '99 but it sold in less than a week.

It's been my experience that you can expect 20% under what ever http://www.kbb.com says your vehicle is worth.

For selling it on your own, depends on the market. Once people see the new body style, the old body style suddenly looks dated and the demand goes down. Especially since lower interest rates bring more and more people within range of being able to buy a brand new one for themselves.

In the dictionary, next to the word "Convenient", there's a picture of a guy trading in his truck at the dealer for a new shiny one, and never looks back. ;)

I was offered $19,500 on my 2001 4x2 with 86,000 miles by the dealer. I advertised on TDR and other places for $21,500 which is basically my break-even point due to taxes, and have gotten ZERO response in 3 weeks. I know not being 4x4 takes it down somewhat. I had it advertised with all my goodies, but I gave up and decided to deBOMB due to lack of interest.

Looks like I'm going to do better by trading than selling outright.

I just ordered an 03. I ask my dealer to do and "In and Out" for me with my 99. I sold my 99 to a friend and the dealer will do the paper work for $65. He then counts it as a trade in on my new truck. So I get the reduced sales tax (39. 9K down to 20. 5k). You might ask the dealer if he will do this for you. This is the second time I have done this and it saved me at least $1200 each time on sales tax. Not to mention I got a fair price for my old vehicle. The only drawback is the transaction has to be on or about the time you get your new truck.

In the state of Missouri you can sell your vehicle to a private owner and as long as you buy a (new to you) vehicle within X number of days (I think it is 60 days) you only pay sales tax on the difference, just like a tradein at a dealership. I bet it is the same in your states. Check the law.

About the trade-in

Traded my 2000 3500 4x4 CTD auto with 5X,XXX miles and $3000 in hail damage on it for my new 2002 3500 4x4 ETH/DEE (it listed for $37000) They gave me $23,000 for the 2000 and sold me the 2002 for $28,500. It was not an easy deal. Had to really work them over. But I won :D

Vaughn, I'm right there with you... I feel your pain! With an 03 on order, I've had almost zero interest. I've had more calls from the local paper than through the TDR (not knocking the TDR). Fortunately, I've had a couple calls, but most have been looking for the standard bed, vs. the short bed. Like many guys on this site, I have a lot of extras on my truck... all completed professionally, and who ever buys it, will get a great deal... a great truck for the money!

Hang in there Vaughn!

-Ken

Same here Ken B, some calls from the local paper but nothing from TDR. Oh well.

Being that there are a lot of shortbeds out there, many people would seem to want them, and I doubt having the SB would detract in value that much.

I know my truck being 4x2 in the Northwest will make it harder to sell, even though it snows very very little here there are passes to deal with.

Put Bull I heard of running a sale through the dealer, I asked around here and none of them would do it. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of going long-distance to purchase. But I am going to check into a private sale and getting tax credit in Washington. I can drop the price a little more and be able to move it and still come out well ahead.

Vaughn

Same here guys, posted mine on the TDR and not much interest and it's a cherry truck with only 25K on it. Then again it's just 2WD. Having second thoughts about getting rid of it. I guess there are just too many trucks out there. I always go back and forth on getting an auto on the new one too.

Well Ill tell you what there is no way I am going to take it in the shorts on this truck, the way the economy is right now the manufacturers will get more and more desperate as time goes on so we are deffinatly in the drivers seat on this one we just need to be patient and I think they will come:{ to us I hope:eek: . I have heard that Ford and Gm are hurting pretty bad already I think it will become a buyers market soon but if not I will keep driving mine until I can sell it for what I owe on it.

I have always put nice accessories on my trucks and have been amazed that these goodies add little to the resale value of the truck. I strip whatever I can from the old truck and either put it on the new one, sell it separately or give it to someone that appreciates it.

Dean

Dean, that's part of my dilemna also. I have an E-brake, 5th wheel, chrome accents, EZ, guages, etc. Even though the trade difference isn't necessarily too bad, by the time I figure in replacing those items on a new 03, plus pay sales tax, higher license fee and insurance, I can put a lot of miles and repairs into the old one which is still in great shape.

Just wondering? When you guys sell a truck that has been modified EZ, ETC. Do you tell the buyer that his 5 year 100K mile engine warranty is no longer? Or explain that if he takes it in for warranty work it might not be covered? Just wondering how that effects the sale to a private person. I know on a trade-in to the dealer they would have to take that into consideration, if they caught it. I'm just wondering about the assumed liability to a private owner? Meaning they come back to you and say you are responsible for the warranty repair since you voided the manufactures warranty by your actions. I guess if you are not going to tell them, you need to have the sales contract you have them sign state that the truck is being sold "as is with no implied warranty from the seller" Just a thought to cover your ass.
