I took the plunge and traded in my HEMI for an 04 HO auto! WOW, I like the updates on the 04's and this truck has nuts!!! I think I will be happier smellin diesel fumes again!

Congratulations, welcome back. Those HEMIs are stout but I think they're just gonna be a phase. I think it was a pretty weak attempt to bring back the power and glory of what the 426 had. On the other hand, my cousin just bought a new half-ton with one and he's getting nearly 18 MPG and he hasn't even put 3,000 miles on it yet. Not bad for a truck that's producing 345 HP and weighing about 6,000 pounds.

I was impressed with the HEMI. I did a little bit of towing, and it did great!!! It would out pull my 97 Power Stroke. My biggest complant was the MPG. running around town it was 6-7. That is just unacceptable!

Boy is this cummins sweet!!! After leaving the dealership I came to a stop light, and just as I approached the light turned green so I didn't come to a complete stop. I got on it, and as I went threw the intersection the tires squeled!:--) They broke loose. a little, and I was moving!! I couldn't beleive it! I went to a power stroke buddies house, and let him drive it. He got it to do it too. Boy did he have a grin from ear to ear!!! I think I have a keeper! now lets play with power!!:D :D

Did the same thing with my 03 HEMI. Couldn't get more than 10MPG, even on a trip. Biggest annoyance was having to stop all the time to fill the "itty-bitty" gas tank

I wish I could afford one of each. My friend's 2500 HEMI with auto/3. 73 is a screamer. I wouldn't call it a weak attemp at all. The first HEMI was 341cid. Then came the 426 years later. I'll be surprised if DC doesn't bring out a 426 HEMI next year to replace the V-10. Chevy's 496 with the Allison needs some company.

We both use our trucks for work. He's getting 17mpg hwy and 14 city. I get 17 city and 19 hwy. City for us includes long stretches of 35 and 45mph so it's not like downtown city.

Congrats on the new truck! How's the mileage on it? On days when I feel like H/A everywhere I've seen as low as 14mpg for the day and when I feel like really light footing it I've seen as high as 19mpg for the day. But one long traffic light will make it drop like a rock...

I have a friend that traded an '01 Dodge 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 to an '03 Dodge 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 HEMI. Man, all he's done is cry over the fuel economy. His '01 had a 360 V8, and it was only slightly better on fuel. He's already asked me about cold air intakes and exhaust systems... ... I told him most likely on a gas engine they would worsen the fuel economy. His eyes bugged out when I told him I got 20. 2 mpg out of my '03 2500 on a recent trip... ... and at 7,300 miles, it's no where near broken in; the 20. 2 mpg was before the EDGE, too. He, too, should trade the HEMI for a Cummins.

tell him not to waist the $$$ on intake or exhaust. I tried a raven muffler, I think it made it worse. I ordered a cold air intake but sold it to my best buddy, and he didn't really notice a differance in milage. ( same truck I had and he gets 13 in town 15 hwy) Just save up for a down payment on a cummins!!

milage report on the cummins: 56 miles of in town and I'm at about 11. almost double of the hemi!!! :D

Chrysler's first Hemi was 331 cubic inches, 180 hp, in 1951. The smallest DeSoto version was the 1952-4 276 cid; the smallest Dodge version was 241 cid in 1953-5. The smallest Chrysler version was 301 cid in 1955. The first Chrysler 300 letter series car was 1955 with the 331 cid hemi at 300 hp. These old style hemis were available with 2 bbl, 4 bbl, and 2x4 bbl carbs.

Mind my asking, did you buy that in Fairbanks, and did you pay the rediculous market adjustment price they were asking?

I bought some parts at the Dodge Dealer in Fairbanks and nearly died when I saw the prices their trucks were stickered at, I'm driving a $48,000 Truck!:D

DM

I know what you mean about thier sticker prices. I had a sales gal that had been working with me for a couple years trying to get me to buy one. When I bought the Hemi, I went to Anchorage and saved a bunch of $$$ She found out and gave me a chewen!!! so when I told her I wanted to trade in the Hemi, she got me a pretty good deal! I don't think Anchorage would have been able to meet it! There customer service is actually much better here too!! I took it on about a 200 mile trip yesterday, and the extra $$ I spent was well worth it!! I am soooo happy with this truck!!!! I averaged about 19 mpg! SWEEET!!!!!

our 2003 4x4 hemi 4 door gets 17 on the highway and 13 in town, I do not see this as bad mileage. compare it to the Chevys!!!

you will see the Hemi still rocks. I own both a hemi and a cummins. I rather pull the boat with our hemi... .

ouch I said that but it is because it is a automatic and my cummins is a 5 speed. The auto gets going faster!!!

I too am getting rid of a hemi ('03 1500 QC, SB, 3. 92 axle, 20" wheels). I sold a '98 2500 EC SB 4X4 to buy it. What a mistake. It drinks gas like mad, has only a 26 gallon tank and doesn't pull worth beans. I pulled my bike trailer from my home in the Florida Keys to Sturgis and back (4600 miles). With the two Harleys on the trailer, about 3500 pounds. Running 70 or so, the hemi got 10 mpg. At the 75 to 80 speeds traffic runs out west, 9! At a steady 60 cruise, 11mpg. Stinks. My flame red '03 is going to the dealer on a trade next Monday. New truck: '04, 2500 QC, SB, flame red, taupe leather, HO CTD, 48RE. I should have bought it last year instead of the hemi. It left Saltillo last Friday.

Jwaters:

I think you just have a good one!! I know many people getting terrible milage like motorhead, myself included!! My best friend has the twin to the Hemi I had, and his has always been better on milage! He gets clo0se to what you are getting!

Motorhead:

You won't be disappointed!!! This new cummins rocks!! Good luck!

jwaters - you're probably talking about the bad reputation of the Bosch VP44 pump. The good news is the newer engines don't use that pump anymore.

I really don't think the hemi replaced the V10, rather the 5. 9L. The hemi is the standard engine in the 2500/3500. The V10 was never standard in anything (except the Viper naturally). I keep hearing rumors about a bigger hemi (6. 1 is the number) to replace the V10. For '04, 2500/3500 engine choices are hemi (standard), CTD (optional).

somebody is full of ****. I sold my HEMI when the last gas tank came out to 8. 8 MPG. To believe guys are getting 17MPG, yeah right. How can an engine vary by twice the mileage? Whatever you guys are smoking, give me some. My HO is at 16. 5 MPG and rising slowly.

jet

Jet, if I hadn't seen it with my own 2 eyes, I wouldn't beleive it either! That is strange that there is such a wide range. My HO has been getting around 15 in town. I tooki it on one longer trip and it was about 20!! vary plaesed with that!
