NOT Trading in on a new Ford Diesel anymore!!!

Previous post:"My new VP44 Pump can't be installed because I dropped the timing key into the gear case. "

Well, after stomping around and getting pretty depressed, I followed to advice from Cummins Mechanic JBHale and my truck is running again, in fact it has more power than before even without the comp wire hooked up-What gives there?

As far as trading for a Ford-You talked me out of it:D

Sorry to hear your giving up on her. I trust you are having other problems than the missing key way (you going to fish that out before you trade it in?) I just looked at your truck specs. Man, you have a lot of $$$ invested in that baby.

IMO you might be better off selling it outright than the trade in. You would at least get some extra money left over for a vacation. That or part it out back to stock.

Keep in touch with us.

Robby I have a few words of advice for you... that I saw once somewhere. . he must have been a wise man. . here goes... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Fact:The First Fords' had 'DODGE' Engines! The new PSD's need them!

Copied this from your Biography "Dodge boy through and through" :-laf

Sorry about your problems but don't expect the Ford to be any better, if you get the 6. 0 it will be a lot worse. Count on the Ford truck not looking or sounding as good as your Dodge 3500 CTD. JMHO ;)

Bob,

I am really sorry to hear about your situation.

I do suggest though that you take a look at the 3rd Gen Cummins/Dodge trucks.

At least take a test drive.

Pit Bull is right, find a 7. 3 if your buying a stroke.

The 6. 0 is a piece of Junk in my opinion, and has problems that cannot be fixed at the moment.

Tradeing for a power joke

I HAVENT HAD THIS DODGE MORE THAN TWO YEARS, HAVE OWNED FORDS AND CHEVY THIS DODGE PULLS BETTER THAN ALL THE ABOVE. COOL DOWN AND THINK ON IT. THESE PROBLEM JUST MAKE YS BETTER DODGE MECHANICS. GOOD LUCK, HARV

As lmills stated... try as hard as possible to get one of the last remaining 7. 3's. You'll be better off even though is not the "latest greatest". It may not even be possible now.

Your situation sounds like something that would happen to me. I'd just probably stomp around the garage for a few minutes, kick the tire, and take the cover off the get the pin outta there. Its not that tough. But thats just me. I completely understand not wanting to have to do extra work. It can be frustrating to say the least.

I sure hope its not sitting somewhere waiting to bust the cover like a KDP. It would be hard to trade in with a huge oil leak.

To make sure its not sitting on a gear tooth... you might want to bar the engine over by hand several revolutions to make sure it didn't end up in the gear meshes. Would probably give you a little extra insurance it wont cause a bigger problem. Just a thought.

Bob,

Jones-West Ford still has a few 7. 3's left if you want to follow others' advice. Go through their fleet dealer, not a salesperson. I would also contact the fleet guy (sorry can't remember his name) at Harrold Ford in SAC. He's a really good guy and will help you out.

I am not affiliated in any way with J-WF or Harrold Ford.

I mainly use my CTD to pull my RV.

I talk to A LOT of guys in rv parks comparing trucks. IF I ever went with a Ford it would have a cummins under the hood.

I have caravaned with F's C's GMC's and compared to them my CTD runs like a top.

I do a fuel additive every tank to help the lp and vp, moved the lp, rebuilt the transmission (DTT), mildly bombed. Not exactely cheap, but should be a one time thing. I do everything in my power to be gentle and smart.

We just went to Pigeon Forge with a F and we have the same 5er's. I left it in cruise control going through the Saluda gap. I looked back and had to radio him what was wrong, he topped it at 40mph (we both entered at 65mph). Believe me I know the F's and C's don'f pull nearly like a CTD.

I only have 18k so I'm barely broken in even if broken in.

Ask those that drive the others doing what you want to do.

Good Luck,

Bob Weis

We have a friend out here in LAS that drives big rig transports for FORD Motors. His runs are between Las Vegas and a parts depot in California. He usually runs out in the morning to get parts for the dealers and comes back in the afternoon. His runs out are usually warranty returns to take back to this warehouse. Do you know what he has been taking back to LA???

6 liter's and injectors by the dozens... It has scared him so bad that he just went a bought a new Dodge 1 ton HO 48re and loves it.

Be aware, if you by a 7. 3 liter, you will spend BIG bucks to to to get 380 hp out of it. . Also it will not last nearly as long as a CUMMINS...

There was a Ford that put out 545 ponies on the dyno at May Madness... It had a ISB in it!!!!

I like the Ford Crew cabs and would own one right now if it had a Cummins in it. Until I drove a G3 Dodge, I felt the Ford was better built, but still loved my Gen 2 with its ISB better.

Let me tell you, other than it not having a true crew cab, the DODGE G3 is as well built as the FORD now and still has the better engine. . And looks meaner with w 4 inch lift :)

It sucks what happened to your truck, but don't you think that FORD and GM have similar things happen?? look at their message boards, you'll see.

Personally, I could give a rats behind about what you are driving, but if you are going to cut your nose off to spite your face, I just want you to make a rash decision before spend 40-45k

Cheers, BIll

We will still talk to you

I am sorry to see that you lost confidence in your truck. I guess we all need to think about what we want in a truck and can accept in repairs not covered by warranty. I really need my truck for work-- it must be durable. I cannot ever see BOMBing it more than 275's and then stop. Still stock for now, however.

I think if I ever get one to seriously BOMB, it will be a 12 V -- Easier to make smoke, raise he!! and live with the consequences.

You basically have a fuel system problem It is either confined to the pumps or the computers that run them. -- or fuel lines and/ or injectors on the mechanical side. At least you do not have Diesel in the crancase and glow plugs to worry about!

Even if you switch brands, feel free to tell us about your new ride . Ya gotta do what you think is best.

Good Luck in your decision. Dave

I wish you the best...

in your decision to trade. I suspect that you are in for a bumpy ride. I looked at Fords before I bought my '92 and talked to people running Ford's and Dodges. The dodges did not have problems hardly, but if they did it was minor. Every ford owner I talked to had problems of some kind and most had to do with the fuel system. This told me that I only wanted a Cummins under the hood. Could not get that in a Ford, so I bought the first Dodge. No regrets and I am looking at a new 3rd Gen within the next 1 - 2 years. ;)

To each his own. I have had some problems with the '99. Two lift pumps and one VP44. I paid for the VP44 and one of the lift pumps. I hate to think of the money I would have spent on repairing and keeping a Ford running for 144,000+ miles as of today.

Good luck. Before you get silly, drink a beer and think about it!

Runs stronger without the pump wire

RR you stated it now runs better without the pump wire. Just using logic , it sounds like it could possibly be the fueling box?

Why don't you run it like it is for now or even try running without the box? If something is causing problems, the fewer variables you have, the fewer causes of a problem you have to solve.

Now let the more knowlegeable among us help out
