How unfortunate of an accident, especially with todays safety standards.

I feel sorry for the family and relatives of the worker who died.

I wonder why he was working alone at most factories the maintenance works are always in pairs. At least at the UAW plants that I have been associated with.

I hate to speculate, but one has to wonder if some of the safety measures were over rode or bypassed. Ive been involved in installing many different types of presses, compressors, various process equipment and even filter cake presses in the effluent process in factories that is likely similar to what he was working on. Safety is always the top priority and is heavily factored in the design of such equipment, especially in a union shop as you mentioned. These types of incidents have become quite rare for large companies like Chrysler or Dupont and are most unfortunate regardless of how it happened.
A close friend of mine was killed in a construction accident years ago, it affects so many people that were close to him and counted on him to come home each and every day. What a sad day for his family.
