I just had my 06 at the Dealer due to no driver side front turn signal, thought it was the bulb, wasn't, only to get a quick education on the circuitry, no more fuses and flasher my boys, anyway assumed it had something to do with plow installation and maybe excess load, etc. and figured I blew out the board (driver) so brought it in. End result the dealer, reset the codes, which I guess I had plenty stored due to plow and that recovered the circuit. Scary! I plan to fuse independently anything I add if not already relay isolated or fused. Board isn't cheap and Dealer wrote it up as a "goodwell" repair, although I would quickly remind him of my 35K goodwill a couple months ago!

The scanner does have a reset feature but it does not work on many that have failed.

I Just called them. They do not make a "T" adaptor that has all 7 wires out.



I told him about the way Dodge changed module and it no longer has fuses protecting it from a shorted out trailer.



I also told him there is a lot of guys that need this adaptor with 7 wires, it would sell.



I also recomended they put inline fuses into the wires to protect the factory trailer connectors as well as the one we are adding in the bed using this adaptor.

Bad idea... ... ... . the 06 is all electronic. You have probably damaged the ITPM it is about $300 warranty cost. Since you have tampered with your wiring it may not be covered

I have had two 06s wired for a in the box trailer plug, and both were tapped into exhisting wiring. No problems. It will be interesting to see if I have any problems down the road. Personally I think if the guy who does the wiring knows what he is doing it should be fine.

I agree, but what I worry about is plugging into a trailer that mice (or my dogs) chewed on the wires, or trailers I don't have control over. My brother seems to have a neck for wiring every trailer different

Plug in bed & LED lights

On Friday we received a memo from one of our trailer manufacturers regarding 2006 models. Basically the memo says that we are not to add bed plugs that tap into the trailer wiring harness as it will void your warranty. We have already wired a ton of 2006 trucks this way as no one had informed us otherwise. We are now going to have to run a pigtail that is fixed with a plug in the bed and the other end that will plug into the standard plug near the bumper.



This memo also mentions that a check engine light will come on anytime a trailer with LED lights is plugged in to a 2006 truck. Something about the voltage difference from standard bulbs and LEDS.



I've heard of a few guys having problems like this with wiring on 2006 models but this was the first we've heard from Dodge in a round about matter through a trailer company.

I am using the reese connector as described in this thread to power my in bed 7 pin. I just spliced into the reese adaptor for power and reverse lights, I mounted a screw into the bed rail (underneeth bed) for the ground.



I included 2-10 amp fuses wired into the turn signals circuits inside the reese adaptor. I just towed 450 miles with no problems. By using the reese T adaptor your not cutting into the factory harness. By adding the fuses into the reese T adaptor, your not only protecting your 7 pin in bed connector, your protecting the factory 7 pin connector as well.



Radio shack or walmart sells these water proof fuses adaptors that take the small version blade fuses. .

For what it's worth on this thread, I tried hooking up the running lights on my 1989 lance camper to the trailer lighting circuit at the rear plug and I immediately blew the twenty amp fuse in the fuse box.

This camper has 14 running lights, so I took 6 out of their sockets and left two at each corner of the camper.

I replaced the fuse and it seems to handle the load, now.

On a different thread about the same subject, anyfx posted a picture and description of a fuse box he built to plug between the truck's connector and the trailer connector. I like his idea and am trying to build a similar fuse box, however, I've run into a problem finding a 6 circuit fuse block like he used. I've been to automotive, marine and electronics supply places and found only the type fuse block which distributes a common 12V, not any that fuse 6 separate wires, in and out. I tried a PM to anyfx and a message came back that there isn't any such member/userID. So, if anyone can either help me connect with anyfx or find a 6 circuit fuse block, please let me know.

the running light circuit is not the problem one, yes its fused. the Left and Right turn/brake wires are the circuits they "forgot" to put the fuses on.

I used this type fuse holder. One on each turn/brake wire, spliced into the reese "T" adaptor, with 10amp fuses in them.

Has there been a solution developed for this yet? I'm about to wire up my in bed 7 pin, and I can help but think that there should be a harness available that I could use. I have the tow package, and I likely wont ever use the factory 7 pin. SO I'd think one could unplug the input to the 7 pin, and plug this into a 7 pin extension harness. I thought I found one online, supposedly made by drawtite (had a part number along the lines of 20211,,,,but I cant remember for certain). I know when I went to drawtites website, I couldn't find the equivelant part. If they make a T with a 4 pin out, why wouldnt they also make em with a 7 pin? (just venting there!)

2 cents worth

I just finished my 7 pin in-bed connector yesterday. I used a Reese Tee adapter as suggested and I used TowPro's idea of wiring in fuses on the turn/brake wires. I also noted that the Reese adapter has 2 wires serving as ground, leading to a single contact in the 7 pin. I tapped into both ground wires to provide more amperage flow via the ground. The smaller wires would probably never cause a problem but I figured a few extra minutes was good insurance.

I won't tow with it 'til the end of the week but everything worked correctly when I hooked up to the RV.



An alternative to any rewire would be to just relocate the factory plug into the bed area instead of the bumper connection. It looks like the wires would reach up to the rear portion of the bed sidewall near the cleat, which is where I put the in-bed plug anyway.

This is about the only setup I found that does not require splicing into the factory harness.



I am getting ready to purchase/install a gooseneck hitch along with all the other stuff that is needed; ie: brake controller, extra plug,etc... .

This is probably what I will go with, if no one finds a problem with it that I haven't noticed yet.

I stopped in at the shop that is dong my hitch on Friday, and they just had a vendor in the day before with the new Husky catalog. They said it had the first complete set up that they had ever seen. He showed it to me and it looked quite a bit like the second picture, but it showed the in bed plug already attached. 82 bucks MSRP.

They quoted me an additional 100 bucks to do the wiring while they did the hitch, so I decided to just let them do it.

Those wiring harnesses look nice. It looks like it will do the job, but it still don't add the fuses that Dodge left out of the brake/turn circuits in the 06. Plug into a trailer that has a shorted brake/turn wire and you take a chance of blowing your PCM. If enough people do it maybe Dodge will come up with a better answer but I am not going to give them any more money while they decide it was a mistake.

I'm about to wire in a 7 pin trailer plug in the bed of my 06 for my Lance camper. A'm I going to have a problem with this? I also need to keep the OEM 7-pin for my boat trailer.

Between this subject, the super-short-bed MegaCab with its wimpy GVWRs, etc. , I really wonder if anyone in the Dodge marketing or engineering groups even own a 5th wheel RV!
