Tow baring a 3500 4x4

Hey Hotshot Car Haulers!!

The previous owner "wacked" his brake controller out with a wire cutter. So, I have a pigtail of cut wires that go up to a plug by the E brake. Does anyone know te wiring colors so I can splice a new controller onto this pigtail?

I don't have it with me now, but I think I do at home. It may also be in your owners manual as well.

Looking back, the real thin one is the "turns on + when you hit the brakes" wire. (i think it was blue)

the rest (I THINK, BUT I would still use a test light first)

Black= ground

Red = positive (I think this is hot all the time)

White = Trailer Brake Feed.

You can get a new Dodge pigtail at the dealer or at almost any trailer hitch shop. These pigtails are marked for wire function either on the wires themselves or in the instructions.

Chances are the wire colors on the pigtail will not match up with the wire colors on the brake controller. These wires have to be matched up by function, NOT by color.

You'd better be sure of your wiring before you plug your controller in. If you have the wiring mismatched, you can toast your brake controller.

This is what I got

Mine is a 01 and I have not installed trailer brakes yet. I lookes at the harness and this is what it says. solid blue wire is trailer brakes, solid black is ground,the white with brown stripe is vehicle brakes, and the red with black stripe is 12 volts 30 amps max it says. hope that help you. Justin

OK, I really screwed something up now. My brake controllers wires match color for color so I spliced them to the pigtail. I tried it and no go. BUT, now my brake lights dont work. I checked the 15amp fuse at the bottm left in the interior fuse box labeled BRAKE. I also checked the 40AMP under the hood. Nietehr are blown. Any other ideas where to check?

Brake control wiring

Mr Webber,

Go to your local RV store and purchase a wiring harness made for a Dodge, if you have a factory tow package. If you buy a Tekonsha Voyager, wire as follows:

1. Red wire goes to cold side brake. Test with test light. Light will come on when brake is depressed.

2. White is ground. Ground goes to battery - negative side.

3. Black is power and should be 12 v. all the time and should run to the rear of the truck to charge the battery on the camper.

4. Blue goes directly to the brake.

You need to check each fuse with a test light to determine which light is blown. The truck could have separate circuits for truck tail lights and trailer tail lights and/or stop lights.

Personally, I like the Drawtight brake controller the best, because it has LED for the amount of braking you use.

Here is my problem. The colors all matched and I assumed they would just splice color for color. Wrong, so now I assume I may have smoked the controller. I will test it in the Ford again and see if it still works. Here is the color matrix I found. Why would Tekonsha not use standard wiring colors like red for power, black for ground?

Function Truck Control

Brake Lt. Blue Blue

Power Red /Tan Black

Stop light White Red

Ground Black White

Here is a link to the site I got this from. Scrool down about 6 pages for the Dodge notes and color matrix... .

I saw somebody else do this one day, yes you smoked the controller. But it may have a 5 or 10 year "no matter what" warentee, Mine did

:D

pigtailI

I bought the pigtail from my local UHaul store. They had it hanging on the wall. It was labeled for Dodge Rams and it worked great. . about 13 bucks...

Was at my local dealer today, so checked with the parts department for one of these pigtails. Mine has the towing package (I bought it used, thus no pigtail with the truck). Anyway, the parts guy had no idea what I was talking about. :confused: He looked it up and located a 'towing wire harness' for $70. I think I'll stop at U-Haul!
