2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Trailer brake control/running lights dont work

i just installed a new tekonsha brake controler in teh factory plug under the dash and the light that is supposed to come on when a trailer is hooked up doesnt come on, i checked to make sure i am getting power and sure enough 12v are coming into the controler. also i noticed that the running lights on my trailers arent working, i dont drive much at night so i never noticed it. has anyone else had this prob or know what it may be. i have checked the plug in the rear of the truck and all contacts are in good shape, i think i am going to replace that plug reciever and see if that helps. any info is appreciated.

I have had a dirt plug on the truck not make contact.
