I need to install a trailer brake on my 2001 2500, and I'm wondering if it's a job I can undertake or if it's best to have it installed by a pro. I'm pretty competent with most things on my truck but I don't want to get in over my head. Does anyone have some input that will help me make a decision?

Thanks

Depends on how much you want to spend. Most here will agree that the Max-brake will be the best. It comes with a premium price but you get what you pay for. The inertia-based controllers from Tekonsha are far less money but can and will do the job..... and they are plug and play with the correct harness - provided your truck came with the factory towing package. They make a harness that plugs directly from the truck to the Tekonsha controller. I understand the Max-brake will be a little more involved, but certainly within the limits of an avg. truck owner. All depends on what you want to spend.

My recommendation is spend a little more money and buy the precisely matched and modulated trailer braking that only the MaxBrake brake controller can provide.

Installation is simple but does require basic skills and handtools. You'll have to back one of the brake lines out of the master cylinder to install a Tee fitting to provide brake pressure to the MaxBrake transducer then run a very small wiring harness through a rubber or hard plastic plug in the firewall into the driver's area. Drill a couple of holes in the lower edge of the dash near driver's rirght knee to mount the controller, plug in the wiring harnesses, and enjoy great and safe trailer braking.
