Anyone know if there is a fuse that controls the battery wire going to the trailer plug.

I have no juice at the plug for the line that's used to charge the trailer battery.

Nick

I have a 20A fuse in the fuse box I think it's number 19?? It's labeled Trailer Battery. (I have the tow package with the round 7-pin connector)

Good Luck

Yeah, the fuse was blown. Now I need to get a new fuse. Don't have any in the barn. And then try to figure out why it popped. I think I know why.

Thanks,

Nick

If you pluged into your trailer when the trailer battery was well discharged, the charge rate from your truck system can exceed 20A, especailly if the truck is running. This can be prevented by plugging in with the engine off and allowing the charge between batteries to stabalize for a few minutes before starting the engine. I monitor the carge rate on my trailer with a built in shunt/ammeter system and high initial peak surges are not uncomon.

Carry extra fuses.

Very good info :)

As long as this topic has come up, does any one know a quick and easy way to convert the line to an "engine-on" charge only?? Concerned about dischargine the main batteries with a camper.

Sure, pull the trailer plug when you turn the engine off. If you want it to do it automatically, use a relay, wire the current charge line to the NO contacts, and wire the coil to the ignition.

I use the hot line on mine to run a "special" wiring package on my trailer. I've got the clearance lights separate from the taillights, no overloading any circuits that way. I just went into the loom underneath, cut the wire, and ran a switch into the cab. I may have changed it so now the front half of that circuit runs right off the battery, can't remember if I did that yet or not. I don't like that dinky little wire that the factory uses. My switch now runs my gauge lights as well. Not dim-able but they aren't bright enough to need that. Next step is to tap into the cab markers and install an interrupter. Don't know why really, just think it'd be kinda cool.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have always plugged the trailer in while the truck was running and have blown fuses in the past. I believe my old 2002 had a 30 amp fuse and once I had blown the fuse on the trailer side of the connection.

I did the same thing as was Tim did, installed a 30amp relay in to the power wire so when you shut the truck off it opens the contacts and thus wont let the trailer pull down the truck batteries. I also wired in a interupter switch in to the trailer running lights so I can thanks the bigs rigs when I pass them, with out shutting of my lights or using trun signals or something. Anyway Thanks and have a good 4th!
