Trailer electrical problem

I'm looking at possibly buying a new 2008 Jayco Jay Flight G2 29RLS through a friend who buys at auction (wrecked cars, trailers, equipment or anything that makes money). This trailer is at Jayco in Middlebury. From what I understand the transporter hooked his break away battery up backwards and killed something. Seems to me like it would just blow the inline fuse but it can't be that simple or they would have replaced it and gone. Could it kill the converter? I just thought I would see if anyone here has any ideas.



I will probably be the one to go get it (even if I don't buy it) and bring it back here to Georgia where I'm working temporarily (the friend's business is also here). I used to be an RV transporter pulling Jayco only so I have been to middlebury a pile of times. I even pulled some '08 stuff before quiting at the end of June but never thought I might be buying one.

On my Holiday Rambler I hooked up my Batterys backwards by mistake & it blew the fuse on the converter. On mine it was hard to see the fuse, it was on the side of the converter. Hope this helps you out.

I also was an RV transporter for three years, technically still am, but not currently pulling. I worked for JET, Inc. for a few months also. I'd bet you know the reason I quit.



I consider it strange that a brand new '08has been sold at auction because a transporter hooked up his breakaway brake battery backward. That error might have blown a fuse, could possibly have even blown out the convertor (I doubt it) but those should be nickle-dime repairs.



Jayco may have determined or suspect that the 12 volt polarity reversal wiped out the refrigerator module, possibly even the furnace control board, possibly the CO2 and smoke detectors, maybe something else I'm forgetting. But I still don't understand declaring it a total.



If you can diagnose and repair RV appliances and systems and have access to discounted parts from an RV parts supplier it could be a true bargain. It might be a bargain even if you have to pay retail to have an RV repair shop repair it.



Sounds a little fishy to me though. I wonder if there isn't physical damage you don't know about yet. I have heard of a new trailer being totaled because the transporter had a bad injector and contaminated the trailer with black soot and diesel smell.

Yeah, I don't understand why they would get rid of it either if it was something simple. The guy already bought it so regardless I will probably go pick it up for him and depending on what's wrong I may buy it from him.



I pulled for Classic out of the Middlebury yard for about 2. 5 years starting Feb. '05. I really don't know much about Jet. All I ever heard was that they paid higher but required you turn in all your receipts making log book fudging a bit harder. I guess you would know if that's true or not.

Yes, you are right. You have to turn in toll receipts, fuel receipts, truck maintenance reports and receipts, every piece of paper you see and touch has to be turned in and they audit to see if they can catch you fudging your logs. It's a gotcha game.



JET pays better than anyone else in the industry and is a great company to work for but their logs/safety supervisor takes all the fun out of working for them. He loves grinding the drivers down. The genius told us during orientation that conventional travel trailers are safer to pull than fifth wheels on slick surfaces because the wind lifts fifth wheels and reduces rear axle traction.



I decided life was too short to work for him. I was pulling RVs for fun and for extra income, not because I had to work. Many of the drivers who have worked for JET for several years and tolerate him have had nose to nose screaming matches with him that the GM had to step in and calm down.



If you don't mind working under someone's thumb JET is a good company.



Good luck on the Jayco. You'll have two days with it to check it out pretty well before you deliver. I'd hook up my battery, and plug it in to 110 vac, put a propane bottle on it, and see what you can learn while it's in your possession.
