Trailer roof coatings

I have a TT with a bare aluminum roof. Lots of heat comes in from the ceiling area. I am told to go with a white reflective coating. Has anybody coated a roof? What did you choose? Is priming needed?

I have the bare aluminum on my TT also. All I ever did was the seams, I dont think the aluminum will ever wear out.

The stuff I was told to use is kind of like tar in consistancy, but looks sort of like aluminum colored paint.

If you want the brand, I think I still have 1/2 a can around here somewhere. I can look tomorrow.

Eric,

The reason I want to coat it is to reduce the heat coming in through the roof. I pulled some wiring through the above ceiling area and discovered the roof is HOT. A white coating will reduce the heat and save on running the A/C so much.

My trailer (LQ, 3 horse) has a sheet aluminum roof which I have done the the seams periodically with aluminum colored roof coating as stated by PATRIOT, though more to maintain water integrity. Have wondered about the heat effectiveness (relectivity) of roof painted coatings, white versus aluminum. Both reflect well, but wonder what the insulating value could be with a thin coating painted on. 'R' value of insulation usually requires some thickness even for the most effective insulations. Maybe more effective to put high R value insulation between the roof and ceiling to counter heat transfer (PIA on a completed trailer though!!). But white or aluminum coating/color reflecting would be cooler than a dark color absorbing. Do know that the white fiberglass tops on many horse trailers make it brighter inside. Either AC or plenty of ventilation is needed for any in the summer.

I have a 26' Tag car trailer with an one piece all alum. roof. I put 2 coats of Cool Seal elastomeric coating on and it reflects enough of the heat. Trailer is not insulated and my roof A/C keeps it cooled to 75 easy in the 100 degre Texas sun. The stuf is thick when you put it on. I may put on another coat some day. There are some plsces it looks like it could use it, but it works well like it is. Get it at a good building supply. It took 2 galons to do my roof w 2 coats. Good luck/

Snow White Elastomeric Roof Coating

My current 5er roof is rubber but my old motor home had a steel/alum. roof and I coated it with a White Elastomeric roof coating. Didn't use a primer but put on two coats for a good white color.



WHAT A DIFFERENCE THIS MAKES. It was almost like adding another A/C unit. Ceiling in the motor home must have been at least 20 degrees cooler. You could even put your hand on the roof without burning yourself after applying the coating.



Here is what I used and I got it a Wal-Mart and my 25 foot motor home took two gallons. Applied it with a medium nap 9" roller and paint brush around vent pipes. Also did A/C unit cover.

I also used an elastomeric. I'm pretty sure it was called Rapid Roof, was white in color and pretty thick but, went on very well. I believe it is made in Minnesota or somewhere up in the northern states.
Around areas that need to be strengthened, there is a polyester mesh cloth that can be imbedded in between layers of Rapid Roof. I did my entire roof and it lives in the sunlight of Phoenix, AZ., has been on for many years, now, and still looks great. I did it to prevent water from coming into the framework of the walls of the trailer. I've had that happen to other trailers and it's expensive to repair the wood framework's.
Another thing I did was to paint it on the small part of the vinyl awning that is always exposed to the elements. That has worked very well, also.
I can't find the empty bucket that the Rapid Roof came in. Someone threw it out, I think. Sorry I can't be of more help. It is an industrial quality product.

My RV is 12 years old, with a 10 year EPDM Rubber roof, I used this EPDM (2 Gallons for my 21' RV) rubber coating over the existing rubber and it turned out very well, in some ways better than new, since I also coated the various fitting and caps, extending their useful life at the same time, and pooled up some coating on former low spots to eliminate areas of standing water.
