Trailer Tires???

I have heard that you should only run tires designed for trailer use on your trailer. I have a set of 15x7 load range D on my horse trailer right now and was going to use a set of 16 inch rims that I have laying around and run somthing like a 225/85 R16 Load Range E. These are truck tires and not trailer tires so should I stick to 15's and use trailer specific tires???

There are no load range E 16 inch trailer tires. The maximim 16 inch ST trailer tire I have seen is load range D. The new trailers with 16 inch load range E, F, or G are using light truck tires. Goodyear Wrangler is popular with the trailer manufacturers. Many people have had trouble with the Goodyears, I replaced mine with Michelin steel sidewall XPS Rib tires.

The latest Camping World catalog I got shows a Goodyear Marathon ST235/80R16 load range D tire for $146. The only 16 inch ST I have seen.

I bought four of those goodyear light truck tires and they hand grenaded or at least three of them did and I got rid of the fourth. I found out that they had a warning out on them for hot weather. All three blew in hot weather. Never again. The last one to blow bent my bed on the left side.

I've been running Michelin 215/85/16 LTX load E on my 40ft gooseneck and sure do like them. Trailer weighs 9200 empty and frequently load 13-16k on the trailer. Only had one flat with these tires because of a screw. JM . 02

Trailer Tires

Everything I have read about trailer tire replacement is to never use a P (for passenger) rated tire since the side walls flex more than an ST (Special Trailer) rated tire. This flexing cause heat which we all know can lead to tire failure.



I have ran LT (Light Truck) tires on utility trailers without problems but I will stick to ST's on the Travel Trailer since I have to buy new anyway.



Back to the subject - I don't think it would hurt anything to upgrade to the 16's. Try to remember that the higher profile tires will flex more so if you can I would go with a 235/85-16 E is very poplular.

I 'm sure you can use a LT tire on a trailer without worry. The ST tires have more UV protection blended in the rubber compound so they will probably last longer time wise, but if you wear out the tread on your trailer before the sidewalls cracks get too deep you'll be OK. BY the way if any has a trailer damaged because of a Goodyear tire(certain size trailer tires) Goodyear will replace the tires and fix the damage caused by the tire. The # is 1 800 321 2136. Besides the sidewall flex issue I understand that "trailer" tires are compounded with UV protectors so they won't deteriorate as quickly while just sitting.

The tires my 5th came with were LT's - Goodyears I think. I had blowouts on 2 of them and replaced with Michelin XPS ribs.

The thing about trailer tires is they put something in the rubber so the tires won't crack within a couple years. Worth the money if you let the trailer set. :-{}

Lots of Load Range E ST Tires

Most of your 16" wheels come with the load range E tires. I can only get load range D in the `15" size. Go for the E range if you can.

re : 205 75/15's . Called Sam's today and they quoted a new Goodyear Marathon load range D, 8 ply, 65 psi tire for $89. Works for me desite the prior bad rap.

I have been dragging a TT all over the western US > talked to lots of RV'S. DO NOT buy Goodyear Marathons> they are junk!!!

My 2000 Terry 5er came with BadYear truck tires. They been working fine over the last 2 years. Or course if you add up the max weight they are rated for, it is exactly the number on the gross of the trailer!



I was thinking of replacing the Cooper SRM-2's on my truck (with the same Cooper tire) and putting the old ones on the camper, there bigger, and have a higher weight rating.

I have a friend who put 16's on his horse trailer. Just remember that makes for a long step into and out of the trailer. we had touble at times loading and unloading his stock. Something to think about.

I wore out 2 sets of goodyears on our 3axle Avion in 11 years no problems the thing is to keep them inflated to the max 50psi for load range C and 65psi for D's if you do have a problem Goodyear will stand behind them. There are alot of people complaining, but ask them what they have done besides cry. Goodyear only makes the tires. You have to do the rest Make sure the tires can do the job you are trying to do. Sure you can buy cheaper tires. But you are the one that makes them work ,do your homework. The salesman will will unload what ever they can.
