Trailer Info Wanted

I'm in the market for a new trailer and I want to see what the general feeling is on this one.

http://www.big-tex.com/spec/10tl.html

I am unfamiliar with the big tex brand and have only seen it on their web sight. Basically what I'm looking for is your opinion on the overall quality of the unit. It will be used to haul a JD 5303 with loader weighing approx #5500-6000 lbs. (just a guess, I havn't had it on a scale yet) It will also see some time carrying my Vette around to several events. I want to get rid of my #6000 car hauler and do everything with one trailer.

Thanks for the info

The trailer I saw was a tag open dual axle, is that the one? If so it looked like a nice open trailer. I didn't like that the floor wasn't treated. Make sure you have the capacity to haul the JD, if ti was 6000lbs the trailer weighs around 14-1600lb, so right away you need a rating of 8000lbs. Also vetts are low and the dove tail looked awfully short. I didn't see any thing about ramps or there length, but you will need a different set to load the vett. They need to be very long, cut down on the angle. Also make sure the doors will open. And i'd like to see a good front rail. Hope it helps

If you pull up the PDF datasheet, it shows that is a Tilt bed trailer. So the bed tilts back for loading and unloading. check the angles to make sure the Vette will clear it.

Big-Tex are very good trailers. But they are also expensive. I priced a goosneck flat bed through them and through another dealer in Dallas. The Big Tex was $1500 higher.

I do not have as much tractor. I bought a lot more trailer. JD 4600 Front loader/clamshell, backhoe. I ended up getting a BRImar Gooseneck dump. 6' 8 1/2" wide by 16' dump bed. Rated for 14,000 Lbs. Cost around 7. 5K. Dual use obviosly. Dump bed and equipment hauler. I should have found a dump flatbed with removable walls- Hindsight is 20/20. That would have mde a good trailer for pallets of material. See if this link works: http://www.bri-mar.com/hdlowprofile.htm I got the last one on the column- the 14K gooseneck. Not affiliated- just paid them some serious coin- but satisfied Sorry did not read the second part. Dump trailer no good for a a car. One of the tilt- or a nice goosneck flatbed MMMM.

Take a look at H&H Trailers http://www.hhtrailer.com . I hear they make excellent trailers. Their web site is fun to browse.

I don't have one of their trailer's and I'm not affiliated with them, just see a lot of them around. Wish I had one.

It looks like a nice trailer. A tilt bed has to add some $$$.

I have a 10k MacLander 20' tag with hideaway ramps. If I choose the right place to load/unload and/or tilt it using the jack, I can load anything. I think I paid $2300 for it. (can see it here with my sailboat on it)

second the post on H&H

I would suggest you look at H&H also! I own a 25" gooseneck, and it is the best built trailer I've seen to date, and not the most expensive. They have really thought out some nice features, and made them standard equipment.

I am not in any way affiliated with them, but I really like the trailer I bought from them!

Ray

(If I told you about some of the loads I've hauled, the overweight conscious boys would start hollering at me!)

Thanks for all the information so far. I've got time yet to make a choice so I'll continue to do some more research.

I have considered the ramp angle for loading the car. I actually have nailed the front spoiler pretty hard several times unloading on my current car trailer. It is probably unrealistic to try to use one trailer for both, but I keep looking for now.

For those of you who pull a gooseneck for your tractors and such... . what made you make that decision? Was it overall capacity, ease of towing, etc??

Justin

Big Tex makes some very good, but expensive, trailers. I know of a company in Mississippi that makes heavy duty trailers and also makes some smaller stuff too. www.trailboss.com It's a good company and my uncle does a fair amount of business with them. Don't know about pricing but I'm sure you could contact them to see if they can do what you want.

i am also a satisfied customer of H&H trailers... i own 2 of them... a 25' gooseneck 14k flatbed and a 18' tagalong w/ fold down ramps and like both trailers very much! on their website they even have prices... more often then not they are actually cheaper then the prices on the site

I have a 12' tandem axle Big Tex trailer that I have owned for about ten years. I've used it quite often for loads ranging from one to five thousand pounds with no problems. My only complaint about this trailer is the fact that when it was originaly painted the metal was not primed first. I brushed and re-painted the top of the trailer this summer but the undercarriage is still totally rusted. That will be my next project.

Good Luck

Try a Hillsboro

I did lots of checking when I bought my gooseneck equipment trailer. After checking out the finished product I decided on a Hillsboro trailer. They seem to engeneer a strong trailer without just tacking on extra weight to make it strong. Also the attention to detail is second to none. That is primer and top paint, welds being complete on both pieces of metal to be joined, treated lumber well fastened, and the simple but strong design. I would reccomend them to any good friend and not be worried that there would be a problem down the road. IMHO

I have a Bri-mar 18' open and I like it alot. $2100 new its a well thought out trailer. It has removable fenders and a very low ramp angle which I needed for the hot rod, also pulls arrow straight at high speeds.

Big tex is an excellent trailer, but you pay for it.

You might check out Pequea Trailers. They are made here in PA (reduces shipping cost) and are very well made. I just bought a 12K Pequea trailer and really like it... ... Just my $. 02 worth

Try "Trailers Direct On line" They deal with Big Tex Trailers and you will get a very good price. Talk to Jeff. I bought a Race car trailer from them, much cheaper than anywhere else. (It was made by Big Tex. I love it. very well made. I have dealt with Big Tex for several years and always found their products great!

With "Trailers Direct On line" you can "horse trade" on the prices and they will get right!

Hope this helps.

You might want to try Smouse trailers in Smithton. A friend of mine bought a couple of trailers from him and was very satisfied with them.

I bought a Top Brand trailer off of smouse a few years ago. I stopped by there a few weeks ago to see what he had. There are a few decent trailers there (#9990 GVW) that I could be interested in. He said that he would be getting a few more in the near future. I'll have to stop back again to see what he has now.

A little late with my reply, but I have a Pequea also. I got a full tour of the plant when I bought the trailer and cash talks, they are amish...

Granted I only have a 6x10 with split ramps, the construction of the bigger trailers etc was a part of my tour and they are built with the same high quality, I was impressed!
