New question:
Does anybody know what wires in the 96 trailer connection under the dash goes where?
There are 4 in the connector. My brake control has never worked right and I think it has been hook up wrong. Battery I got.
Thanks.
Preston

i do know that the factory wiring does not match the standard wiring for the brake controls. I worked as an install man at a truck accessories store and remember having to wire the factory pigtails funny, but i don't remember the color codes. I know on the brake controller red goes to the brake switch, black is positive, white is ground, and blue is your brake wire.

TT, If you look down from the connector latch with the connector pins facing up, the pins will be from RIGHT to LEFT numbers 1 - 4. This is the supplied harness from the factory for adding the brake controller. The one that plugs in under the dash.
Pin 1 (all the way right looking down from the latch) is Battery.
Pin 2 (usually light blue) is the Trailer Brake B+.
Pin 3 is the Brake Lamp Switch Output
Pin 4 is Ground

If you are talking about the connector that is under the dash and part of the truck wiring harness, with the latch up and LOOKING INTO THE CONNECTOR PINS, Pin 1 is on the right and Pin 4 is on the left. Or face the connector pins down look from the latch side and go from right to left. Same labels as above.

Since the Light Blue Wire is always brakes and is pin 2 it should help orient you on which is pin 1.

TurboThom,

I'm looking at the old Reese brake controller that was wired to the factory pigtail on our 96 3500 (it's been replaced by a Tekonsha wired to an aftermarket pigtail).

The original brake controller (BC) to pigtail (PT) wiring was:

BC red (stoplight) to PT white/brown stripe
BC blue (trailer brake) to PT blue
BC white (battery -) to PT black
BC black (battery +) to PT red

Hope this helps #ad

That did it. Believe it or not,the BC has been wired wrong for 4 years and worked. But it finally died, I guess because of that.
Got a new one, wired like y'all said and all is well.
By the way, the brake switch wire is wired to the third light on the cab. I thought that was interesting.
Thanks all.
