I acquired a 1996 auto 4x4 extend cab 8' box truck. It had an old trailer brake controller that I am replacing with a prodigy. Luckily, the truck has the harness under the dash.

When I get to the back of the truck, different story. No plug at the bumper. There is a plug in the bed for a 5th, but that appears to have been put in by amateurs (scotchlocked in to some lines below the truck).

It there a simple solution (a dodge kit that a seven pin will plug in to)? If not, any suggestions of what I am looking for to splice in a seven pin at the bumper?

I think older trucks had a pigtail (unterminated wires) taped to the existing wires. It should be long enough to reach the under bumper usual mounting place. On my '02 the trailer parking lights are a different circuit from the truck parking lights so it's not as simple as tapping into the existing wires.

If it had the factory towing package wire loom with the brake controller loom, there should be a plug in at the back for the trailer plug, unless it's been cut off.... unfortunately, many "professional" accessory stores do a great deal of "amateur" work.... If that's the case, there is probably no end left, and it's either splice it in or replace the loom from the plug in behind the driver front tire back to the rear bumper.....
