Train People/ Truck shipping help

OK Railroad men and or women, I gotta question. I need to ship a Dodge Dakota and a small Boat Trailer (17' long light duty) from San Bernadino CA. , To any major city in Maine. It will be this spring. Any idea how much it will cost?? Would it be better to send them by truck? I appreciate any help. Thanks, Dennis

Rail Shipment

Forget rail. For what you want to do you would have to hire (rent) a flat car, load and secure the load yourself. If you can't find a friend to dive it with the offer to fly him home, use a vehicle carrier or one of the household movers to move it. Another option would be someone like Horsless Carrage, the people who haul antique cars, and work a deal with them.

Rent a 18' car trailer. Load your Dakota up,take the tires off the boat trailer and slide it up under the Dakota,put the tires in the back of the Dakota. Tie her down,hook her up to the ETH and haul bu!!.

Can't you just hook up the trailer to the Dakota and drive it to Maine, or hire someone to drive it for you? Then fly back. Sounds a lot easier than shipping of towing both.

The idea is to be free to do a little touring along the way. If we were just going to make a bee-line for Main, I would have no problem towing them. It is about $650-$950 to truck the Dakota, not including the Trailer. I was just wondering if Rail was less expensive. Andy can drive the Dakota but it would be nice if her and I could enjoy the sites together. If it comes down to it, I will tow it and when we get to an area that we want to explore (usually some road you shouldn't be on without letting someone know when to expect you back ) I guess I can just un- hook and go. I don't see why I would need my own flatbed rail car. My Ram had to share a car with half a dozen others when it came from St. Louis

Flat Car

Just remember DC rented the whole car, they put 12 trucks on it, but you pay the same price for or 12 but you won't be able rent a tri-level enclose car, but maybe a box car. A flat car wouldn't be practical due to vandalism and theft.

Well, it looks like we are going to drive both vehicles. As it turns out, she is dead set againsed shipping any of the dogs via airlines (which I can understand) so we will use both trucks to haul them to Maine. We don't allow them to ride in the bed so luckily we have two trucks with extended cabs. It is actually alot cheaper anyways. Thanks for the input guys!

Sounds like you've made the best move. I didn't intend to push you away from rail, but it is not a good option for and individual with a one time haul.
