Tran prim for gas Filter

My boss told me he took his truck in for a gas filter change and the mechanic said he primes the new gas filter with transmission fluid. He said he has done it for years... . it only blows a little smoke on first start. Opinions please!

I assume we are talking gasoline . Why?, it will self prime any way with out the atf.
I think the mech just likes to see a puff of smoke. I have never had a gasoline vehicle with a filter big enough to " prime "

I heard about mech's pouring transmission fluid in small quantities into carbs of gas engines for "the detergents" to clean...

blah, blah, blah

Modern Gas Has detergents in it and transmission fluid isn't formulated to nessesarily burn clean.

I wouldn't do it to my gassers or my oil burner.

He has a Diesel... ... I guess I should have said fuel filter.

I've also heard this technique from a trucker giving me tips on my new diesel.
Regardless of whether it helps or not, I can't see how it would hurt. It sounds to me like a safety tip to ensure adequate lubrication throughout the fuel system while the flow gets back to normal after opening for the filter change.

been rehashed 1,000,000 times about using ATF as a fuel additive--theory shot down by bringing "friction modifiers" to our attention... . these are apparently very small particulates that help the transmission's clutching abilities... unfortunately they are bad for the super-tight tolerances inside a Diesel's injection pump... priming the filter with the stuff would at least get the damage done quickly, rather than waiting for a dilute mixture to do it gradually #ad
---- maybe if the guy used some old primitive ATF + nothin', it wouldn't be quite so nasty, but still... . in a word, YUCK!!!!

Good point brought up by RichM. I didn't know they had friction modifier in ATF these days. If that's true, it has no business being in the fuel system!
Well, if your mechanic is compelled to add something, how about Marvels Mystery Oil?
