OK, I know you all are getting tired of hearing me ask about aux fuel tanks. If you will indulge me for one more question, I promise I'll never mention this again!!

Can anyone that has installed the transfer flow aft axle tank (spare tire) tell me why they think it won't fit on a short bed? I've measured my truck and it looks like it would fit. But I'm sure there is some issue or TransferFlow would sell it to fit a short bed, which they don't.

If it would be a "close", I'm willing to try a make it fit. If there is some glaring issue, I'll just go with some bed tank and forget about it.

I know the electronics expects to see 38 gallons in my main tank since it is for a long bed. My short bed only holds 35 gallons, but I don't think that would be a problem.

Thank you all again.

Check TDR#37, p. 148 for some installation notes and photos.

Your OEM tank should be 34 gal, and the long bed has 35.

I don't know what problems you might have, but look at tank to diff, tank to bumper/trailer hitch, tailpipe clearance, shocks. . .

overall you might be better off with the in-bed tank.

Best Wishes with your project.

I would think the problem of adding the 38 gallon Transfer Flow aft of axle auxiliary fuel tank to the SWB QC Ram would be in the supply tubing for filling the auxiliary fuel tank. That particular auxiliary tank has a filler modification to where it actually fills behind the OE fuel door right beside the OE filler port (the OE filler is relocated slightly off center of its present location). All the required components are supplied for the installation. As the routing of the fuel supply tubing to the auxiliary fuel tank is rather precise, there may be some sort of logistics problem with the SWB Ram.

After adding my 54 gallon Transfer Flow replacement fuel tank in my '98. 5 LWB QC 4x4 I was pretty hot on the idea of ALSO ADDING their 38 gallon aft of axle auxiliary fuel tank until I read where the two WERE NOT compatible. Why? Simply, the fuel supply tubing to the auxiliary fuel tank had some sort of interference fit to their 54 gallon replacement tank. ( :( )

yes the spare is just below the tank..

I've never posted a pic on this site but can email one to ya..... give me an hour i'll try attaching one...

I was looking into the tank that Earthroamer put in his. It is a marine plastic fuel tank that has indented slots so you could use straps... and he did from Home depot... . to fit under the rear. his is a shortbed as well.

In the link below, he used the # TP18T model tank. It is a 18 Gal tank.

They sell only to distributors and a person there can direct you to the nearest dealer for pricing. you would need to get a level kit and other stuff.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone!

Joe, thanks for your comments. I've measured all I know to and it appears the tank will fit between everything. It will, however, be only 1/2" from the rear hitch. This may be some federal safety issue that isn't legal. I understand the mounting points may need to be modified. If it will just "fit", I can deal with that, I hope.....

John,

I understand what you are saying about the fill lines. That could be a big pain. Might be more trouble than it is worth.

ehenry, you lose the spare tire when you install this tank. No big deal to me. I can throw it up in the bed. Might be an issue with others though.

rbalcom, I was mainly interested in you giving me your opinion on if there is enough room in a short bed situation to install the tank. Issues like clearance from the hitch to the differential, between the frame rails and the shock mount. Stuff like that. But please, don't go out of your way to do it. Just looking for some general advice.

Also, interesting about the marine tank. I'll look into that also.

Again, thanks for all of the replies. Great information!!

Chris

The spare tire MUST BE relocated after installing the Transfer Flow 38 gallon aft of axle auxiliary fuel tank. In fact, the auxiliary fuel tank hangs lower than even a spare 285/75/16 tire!

Just a heads up
