I have started having trouble with my 91 auto not wanting to downshift into 1st lately. There is a kickdown cable that is atatched ot the throttle cable brackets. This cable has some adjustment to it but do you shorten or lenghten the cable? There is a little lever that you pry up and you can adjust the cable a little.

The bottom (the side closest to the firewall) of the slide link should be touching the pin in the linkage beel crank.

I was thinking that the manual calls for . 200" between the pin on the throttle and the end of the slot on the TV cable?

Yes, there is supposed to be a gap of around 0. 180". Moving it closer to the firewall (larger gap) makes it shift later and kick down sooner. Moving it away from the firewall (smaller gap) makes the transmission shift sooner. Make sure you only adjust in 1/8" increments because it is easy to over-adjust it and mess up the shift points instead of fix them. My cable wasy VERY sensitive to adjustments and I went too far to begin with.

Factory Service Manual say's . 225 inch I forget what the metric measurement is but I think it was 5. 7mm. If your throttle linkage, cable and/or pedal assy is sloppy it all has an affect on shift cable etc. The 89 I picked up had about 60% throttle, everything I mentioned was worn out, the pedal would fold over and lay on the floorboard, cable was stretched and eventually broke. That was after I replaced the breakover spring and bell crank bushings, throttle rod ends etc. The trans cable was so far out of adjustment I could not believe it, over an inch off what the FSM calls for. 296,000 miles and it is like a new truck again, no wonder they sold it, probably thought it needed a pump...
