Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Trans Cooler

Is the canister on the passenger side of the engine the heat exchanger? My temperature sending unit is right below it in one of the lines and is leaking. Does this always have fluid in it or can I remove the line without getting an expensive Amsoil bath?

That is the area where the heat exchanger is located, and yes the water temp gauge is right there as well. I would think that know matter what you do, it will be a messy job removing it from the engine. You have both engine oil and ATF to deal with. I recently noticed mine has a very slight leak at the fitting, I suppose from the recent trany work, I am going to tighten the connection from below, when the weather cooperates, hopefully this will take care of the problem.

My trans temp sending unit is there also. That canister holds coolant too?

there is no engine oil in the heat exchanger. just trans fluid and coolant. inside the heat exchanger there is a small finned cooler that coolant passes through and back to the engine/radiator.

if your trans temp sensor is in the exit line from the trans which is the input line(closest to firewall) to the heat exchanger there should be a check ball fitting/back flow preventer in the exchanger(unless someone removed it) which will keep the trans fluid in the heat exchanger from dumping on you when you take the line off.
