Trans Cooler

A friend of mine has a '91 3/4 ton. The trans cooler mounted on the pass. side under the turbo is rotted through. Trans is full of antifreeze. He took it off & pressure tested it & its leaking antifreeze into the trans fluid lines. Problem is, we can't find one anywhere. Everyone says they're discontinued. Anybody out there know where we might be able to find one? Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

You could get a differnt style and just do liquid-air and not worry about the liquid-liquid one.

When we did the 86 / 92 Retrofit, we found one in a wreck in a bone yard. It even had the check valve line attached, which we did away with. We also got the cooler that goes on the Radiator / grille support on the driver's side. We plumbed it with half inch soft copper tubing for additional cooling effect. The truck we took it off of was a 93. Trans never gets over 150 degrees. Most of my driving is "truck only" but I do load the bed and wouldn't hesitate to pull any trailer. Usually never even moves the gauge which starts at 140. The 92 part number for th tank type cooler is 04720005 and the radiator support mounted cooler part number is 52004929

Are those Dodge part numbers?

Yes, from a 92 parts manual. I have one on disc. If dealer says he can't get due to being obsolete, have him run a scan of all us dealers and see if one turns up.

If you can find it get me the Cummins Serial Number off of the engine. That cooler may be a Cummins item, it is on the 2nd and 3rd Gen trucks.



I will look it up, if it is indeed a Cummins part it will still be available and way cheaper than Mopar.



Will check in the morning to see if you have provided the ESN for me.

Will probably be late tomorrow for answer as I will have to contact my brother as to the engine number. The data sticker came off this engine, but was his from day one, so he contacted cummins and has a certification of the original number. As soon as I have it, I will post it and wish you luck. Maybe John (Jack) will post it. He is JDancoe on here. I will e-mail him tonight and check in the morning. You can go as suggested, with air/oil cooler. Nice thing about tank unit, is it also heats fluid for cold weather use.

mwilson: John just got back to me. My engine number may or may not do any good, as it was in a 4WD with getrag trans, not auto. The engine we got cooler off was in junk yard in Alamosa, Co. L&M is the name. My number is 638576. If it helps, great!

I have to go to the shop this afternoon to help my son change the rear spring shackles on his '97.

Once I get there I think I have a printed Cummins parts manual that covers the 1st gen's CPL parts and will look for the cooler. Only thing I won't be able to do until Monday is to check stock at the Cummins factory.

Will let you know later on today what I find out.

Mike: The number I posted (638576) is the Cummins number for my engine and that is per Cummins. As I said the engine ID plate came off, so John wrote Cummins with the serial number of his truck (he bought it new) and they certified it as that number. May be only six digits because early model. It was hooked to a getrag so it may not show a cooler number for it. (probably not) Maybe someone on here with an original auto setup could supply a number.

The manual at work should show the oil cooler, I am pretty sure it is in there.



I plan to head down about 3. 00pm as my son is working all day today so really can't tear into his truck until the shop closes. Takes an hour to get there from here... . I will try to reply by 5. 00pm.



If anyone following this thread has a 1st Gen with an auto in it, please provide your ESN if you have it handy.

Would make this a little easier.

If so,

Cummins Part Number is 3924018.

Should sell for 349. 00 to 380. 00 depending on what dealer you would get it from.



I can't tell today if the factory has it, will check Monday if you want me to.

I am going to keep the Cummins number handy also, in case I have a problem with mine. I hope Jesej gets back to you. Again, nice work and lots of thoughtful effort on your part.

Cummins has 5 of these oil coolers available at the factory. Your local Cummins or truck dealer should be able to get one for you easy enough.
