trans drain plug

Hi all, ready to change trans oil , purchased the plug from geno"s, could I drill the 1/2 inch hole while the pan is still installed? or would this make more of a mess?, do ya drill dead center on the bottom? thanks for the help

It is best to look at the pan off the truck to determine where to drill... some things are closer to the pan than others... I believe the corners are the best. Its messy the first time through, then you won't need to worry about it once the drain is installed.

Make sure you clamp the pan between two pieces of wood... this will prevent the bit from distorting the pan as you drill through the wood into the pan. I used a couple small pieces of oak (one inside and one outside), c-clamped in the location I was drilling.

Drill a 1/4 pilot hole to do the initial drain. Put the plug on the passenger side of the pan on the back 1/3 of the pan and postion the hole between the pan bolts above it so you can loosen then. Drill the pilot hole far enough up the pan so the drain plug will have a good flat sealing surface.



You can safely drill the pan fron the passenger side and not hit anything if you do it towards the back of the pan and use a smaller pilot bit.

I don't care for the bolt together drain plugs. The permanate solution is to weld a 1/2 20 nut inside the pan then buy a 1/2 20 engine drain plug. No fuss,no muss
