I think this weekend might be "be-kind-to-my-truck" weekend. Thinking of changing the fluid in my NV5600. I'd like to consider the filter from Geno's. A couple of questions:

How often do I have to change the filter? Will it plug up right away from the stuff that didn't drop-out in the fluid change? (IOW, how soon until I have to buy new oil again)?

I saw mentioned in another thread that the gaskets can cause problems. Are they just prone to leaking, or is the problem that they make it easy to warp the cover? What's the consensus, gaskets, or RTV?

Is there any reason the filter could be more problem than it's worth (price sure seems cheap enough)?

Also, (maybe stupid questions, but... ) how hard is it to re-fill the unit, and how do you check level? (No, I've never checked the top side for a dipstick or fill port, figure I'm better-off asking someone with experience, while I'm stuck here at work). The latest issue of the magazine used a fancy funnel set-up. Is this necessary, should I consider one of the EZ funnels (from Genos), or can I just pour carefully right from the bottles?

Thanks for your patience/help!

I can't comment as to the effectiveness of the filter, or how frequently it needs to be changed, since I don't have one.

As to the gaskets vs RTV, I used RTV when I installed FastCoolers. I carefully removed all the old RTV, and carefully applied new stuff and have experienced absolutely no leaks.

There is no dipstick on the transmission. The level is checked/filled from the fill port on the driver's side toward the rear. It's a recessed hex head (I'd call it an Allen head) of 17mm size. Fill level is to the bottom of that hole. The fluid drains are the bottom-middle bolt on the PTO cover (note: fluid will come arcing out from that hole when the bolt is removed, so hold the drain pan a bit away from the transmission).

I used Penzoil Synchromesh, which happens to come in squirt bottles (like gear oil does). I was able to refill the transmission by squeezing each bottle into the fill hole. This takes some time, but it works.

I hope that helps. :)

You change the filter at the same time you change the oil, no special intervals:)

I doubt it would plug up but even if it did it wouldn't cause any problems, change the oil the same time as if the filter wasn't there.

The gaskets that come with the kit are cork and squish out very easy, I would use RTV only.

Its not much trouble and its inexpensive, I think its worth it.

BTW the Wix# for the replacement elements is 51548 ;)

i just got in the trans. filter too from ginos and saw there is 2 gaskets that you mentioned. since the kit consists of a cover and a plate, which filter goes where? i emailed ginos tech dept. 3 days ago w/this question but no answer yet. guess they are super busy. thanks !!!

The filter assembly usually goes on the right (passenger) side with the side marked "TOP" up, it can also be mounted on the left (driver) side with the "TOP" marking down but the right side mounting is most common. I couldn't make the gaskets work so I just used RTV and it hasn't leaked a drop in 40,000 miles.
