What is the best way to get all the tranmission fluid out while servicing your transmission, including the T/C?

You can loosen (but not remove) the valve body bolts, that will get some additional fluid out of the converter. Other than that, I don't know that you can without some sort of "flushing" machine.

Why don't they put drain plugs on converters anymore, anyway?

If you loosen the valve body screws, make sure you have the correct torque wrench and torque them up in the correct sequence.

After you service your transmission and added new fluid, disconnect the cooler line comming from the cooler. Put a piece of hose on the line and place in a large bucket. Start the truck and run it through its gears with your foot on the brake. Put the trans. in neutral and start to add ATF to the trans while running. Just keep adding atf untill the fluid comes out of the line clean. Shut off motor and hook up line and check fluid level.

I would only do this if your transmission has just been overheated and burnt the fluid. Following the service intervals you do not need to drain all the oil. Just adding fresh oil will be enough. If the fluid is just burnt due to age or slippage then changeing the fluid is a very bad thing to do. ATF is very high detergent and will stripp away any clutch material and the transmission will last for a very short time afterward.

Why doesn't the factory install drain plugs anymore???

Easy!!! Penny pinching bean counters!!!!!

Serously, every nickel they can save means huge profits when you build a million units!!! Hang the customer and mechanic! The factory just builds them. Fixing them is OUR problem!

I'm with lgibson, no need to change all of it unless it's damaged or you are changing to synthetic. 180k on stock transmission with only draining the pan.

I know, I know, I realize that. It also creates an entire industry of companies that make exotic machines to exchange your trans fluid:( To be rational, though, I agree with illflem and lgibson, no need to change all of it. Most of the crud ends up in the pan and filter anyway, unless it's burnt or broken.
