I agree with LSMITH on the warranty issue and will barrow his Jr Diesel Commando guy to illustrate a point about input shafts. But first let me say that it is not impossible to break an input shaft shifting locked but it is the exception not the rule. Allison transmissions in the Dmax shift locked after 24mph. They are set up this way from the factory. Obviously Allison has tested locked shifts enough to know that they will not bankrupt the company on warrantee issues. OK let’s get back to Mr. Jr Diesel Commando and use this fictional character to illustrate what I understand is main cause of input shaft breakage. Mr. Jr Diesel Commando gets into his truck that he just bolted on and plugged in the stuff to get him into the 375 to 425-horse power level. Mr. Commando is also a faithful reader of the TDR and reads earnestly everything he can find on launching off the line. He doesn't realize he is reading posts from guys who set up their trucks to drag race and have all the expensive goodies like billet shafts and sponsorships to cover things like twisting a shaft off now and then. So he jumps in the truck with his buddy and power brakes the engine until he gets 10 pounds of boost and then lets off the brake and floors it. Wow that was neat look at all that smoke, and black marks too! So being a Redneck Mr. Jr Diesel Commando says to his friend “hold my beer and watch this”. (Famous redneck last words) Now I wana try 20 pounds of boost. So he applies brakes and fuel --- SNAP, CRUNCH WHAM and his stomach sticks in his throat and $$$$$$ flash in front of his eyes. After all he just spent 3000 bucks on the transmission.

And then there may be the case of damaging the shaft while power braking at 15 pounds of boost and finishing it off with a good solid locked 2-3 shift at WOT. Again there are exceptions but most of the shafts that I have heard about, have been twisted off while launching. Lets not give shifting locked a bad name by blanket generalities. The overall rule is pay before you play and you will have more fun.

Well I better add a disclaimer just in case someone feels slighted or slandered.

(This illustration is not based on any one event or an actual person. )

First off, the Duramax DOES shift Locked to Locked, but not after some fancy computer programming.

The D-Max Does not lock the T/C until 50MPH, unless it is in Tow/Haul mode, or at WOT whem not in Tow/Haul mode. The TCC will not unlock untill below 48MPH, or 20MPH depending if you are in tow/haul mode or not.

The D-Max has the biggest input/output shafts of the "big Three", snapping a shaft at 300HP, and the small RPM drop between gears isn't a big issue.

425HP? What about Big HP?

Solid locked 2-3 shift at WOT,, isn't that OK ? Should I be locking and unlocking the TC for shifts?

Big HP? Get the billet shafts.

Locked 2-3 shifts at WOT? Not a problem I do it quite often with out any problems and I don't have billet shafts.

I understand that you have a multi disc TC so the answer to that is no.

If you had one of the single disc TC's distributed by the most vocal supplier of that type of TC I would agree with their recommendation and use the TC saver function under WOT conditions.

Lets take a deep breath and avoid a urination confrontation here.

The only one that loses if that were to happen is the poor soul looking for help and he is the LAST one we need to ignore... ...

1sand0s,

You'll be amazed how much more effieciently a Manual will put the power down.

So,, If I have a DTT Billet Shaft, and ATS Guts,, does this mean I can post on both ATS and DTT threads? :D

ROFLMAO!!!

That was a good one LSMITH

This will be a 1st if it can make it, a transmission thread in which the final outcome doesnt involve blood. Crossing my fingers that we could start a different trend here.

How many of you guys have actually broke an input shaft? Never broke one in the white truck, even going to the drags with the nitrous on kill.

Darn we better start talking about warrantees fast or we will all get a strike for mixing transmission companies in a discussion. What a bummer! I was enjoying the conversation.

This is just my opinion but there is something wrong with a rule when the first thing it does is remind you that you aren't supposed to be able to get along with someone else.
