The other day when changing the oil I noticed gear oil on the bottom of the bellhousing and transmission case. I called the dealer yesterday to make an appt. to get it taken care of. Now, two questions for you guys.

I haven't heard of anyone with a leaking input seal, is this a common thing? Is there a common cause I've missed here?

Also, I worried about the clutch. Since the oil appears to be coming through the little holes on the bottom of the bellhousing, that means the clutch could be oil soaked also. It's not slipping yet, but with the addition of a few bombs I'm planning to do soon it could. Then they'd blame the clutch failure on my bomb's, not the oil. Oh well, I guess that's why I bought a new truck with a warranty: So I could fix everything myself.

I had my 5speed apart fixing a few things and the input had just started to leak at 80,000 miles.

The cause?

New Venture flunky bashed it in crooked and left a dent, distorting it,when they installed it, lucky it lasted as long as it did.

So yes, it could happen anytime, anywhere.

I just got the same diagnosis on my truck today. Should this be covered under the 100k warranty? My dealer is saying no, that the engine only and it's components are covered.

BigMike, do you have the extended warranty? If you do, that seal is covered.

JLinder, what does the stuff look like? My 5 speed just started doing this last Friday night after I pulled the 5'ver to Savannah. It doesn't smell like oil or gear lube, but it's got a thick, gunky consistency. The clutch isn't slipping and the stuff isn't dripping yet. TIA

I had the same problem but with a 6 speed . I didn't even get 4,000 miles on the truck. They replaced the clutch and it wasn't even slipping yet.

It was leaking slow enough to run down the bellhousing, and get blown over the bottom of the trans case. I had a nice slime trail going front to back. Didn't hurt the clutch though.
