Trans oil change

Hi guys. Did a search and don't find definite answer. Is it safe to pump out trans fluid in neutral with return line loose? I'm going to use +4 Trans fluid. I'm putting a Goerend pan on with drain plug. I can't afford to mess this up. Opinions please.

yes, just do't let the sump go empty.
