Trans Problem

Going up a good size hill at around 25mph it seemed like my trans was shifting real fast between 1st and 2nd, I shifted it into 1st till the top of the hill and had no other problem. There was no load on the truck. Has anyone had this problem or have an idea of what it might be. thanks for the help...

I have experienced the same thing on my old '95 and my current '98 24 valve. It is a combination of just the right speed, RPM, throttle setting. The trans can't seem to make up its mind. I have had it happen unloaded and with my trailer connected climbing the same bridge here at home. So, either back off, give it more, or down shift, and the problem goes away.

Welcome to the Auto transmission World. What you describe is called transmission "hunting" and is just that - it's trying to find the best gear for your current speed and load conditions. You can usually fix it by putting more pressure on the accellerator which increases line pressures a bit, or manually down-shifting into 1st or 2nd until you crest the hill.



The "hunting" isn't particularly good for your transmission, either, since it's working the clutches while you're going between gears. Pick a gear and stick with it, or step on the gas to increase the line pressure and load on the transmission.

Mine is doing the same thing!I took mine to the dealer to show them what it was doing. They replaced some of the cluches and replaced the valve body and torque converter and still does the same thing! So if that is all that can be done I quess I will live with it! Thank goodness it was done under warranty cause if I had of payed big money to to replace all of that I would be ticked!

The shifting I am talking about is a severe case of hunting. It slammed so hard and fast that I jumped off the power the first time it happened to me. I was also impressed how firm and quick the shifts were. It was a 1/2 then 2/1 then 1/2 shift about 3 times before i had chance to get off the power. And it certanly did not feel good. Each time it has happened I have had a fair amount of power applied too. But I don't think there is anything particularly wrong either. At least not to go spend any money on. The problem usually happens with a lot of power but less than full throttle pulling a hill. So now I just avoid that throttle setting.

1 2 hunting

I had this problem for some time on my 99 24V 4x4. Not sure what is was and the dealer did not have a clue. I found on Bill K's DT website a guy that had a similar problem and replaced the Govenor solenoid and Govenor Pressure Transducer. Well I recently had my trans DTT by Fred Swanson at Desert Diesel Parts and had the Gov Solenoid replaces (opps, I forgot to have him do the transducer). With the new line pressure the hunting was not way out of hand and it would shift HARD once it made up it mind what gear it wanted to be in 1st or 2nd. I called Fred and we agreed to do my first flush a little early to get the Gov Transducer replaced (not fully conviced it would fix it but had a feeling). The moment I drove it after the swap the hunting was gone and the shifts to second are solid and amazing.

I had the same problem with the same cure... Governor pressure sensor and transducer. Installed them myself, no big deal.
