Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Trans rebuilders??

Hello Everyone,



Does anyone have a reputable transmission rebuilder in the NY area who knows how to build a reliable 47re for our diesels... 10 years ago I put in a DTT valve body and torque convertor and managed to get 177000 miles out of my otherwise stock 47re, but soon it is time for a rebuild... I'd like to buy a DTT master kit with all the good parts and have a local guy do the rebuild on my unit... I'd rather not deal with the shipping back and forth and crating hassles if I can avoid it... . I plan on doing a few mods to the truck, but nothing more than 350-400 HP... This is still my daily driver and I do some towing usually no more than 10,000lbs or so... I don't think I'll ever need billet shafts or any other fancy stuff, don't really drag race or anything like that... Like to roll into every now and then and impress some idiot trying to cut me off#@$%!. HAHAHA I don't want to go to the run of the mill stock trans shop and have problems trying to explain what I would like done to the trans... I live on Long Island, but dont mind doing some driving to take the unit to the right shop... Thanks for any suggestions. .

My advice would be call Bill Kondolay at DTT and ask him for a referral to an authorized DTT builder as close to your area as possible.

I would not recommend having a local transmission shop build a DTT transmission. I doubt your results will be satisfactory and I'll make a bet that Bill Kondolay will tell you something similar.

Sometimes it is worth the inconvenience and expense to travel to where you can purchase the products and services you want and need.

If you can't find a DTT builder close enough to satisfy you consider one of the other good builders like Goerend. I read lots of good comments about him here in TDR.

Off hand, Tim Barber is in Virgina Beach VA. If you can't anybody closer that is recommended he would be an option. I think Loyd Mills shop is up your way but not sure where, if they do transmissions, or even in business anymore.



Virginia beach is a crap drive on 95 but pretty sure the effort would be worth it.



Local transmisssion shops are not always a bad deal. There are some excellent builders that just simply don't care to get that well known. Finding them is a task though, might want to get some referrals from DTT, Goerends, etc and see if there is somebody closer.

Thanks for the replies..... I figured I'd ask around here to see if anyone has had any good experiences with someone local to me... . Virginia may be a little far for me to make 2 trips, one to drop off trans and one to pick up trans... . But I will consider the drive... Want this trans done right... . As we all seem too familiar with, not everyone has the knack for the 47re..... I'll start making some phone calls in the next few weeks to the top name builders we all love and see who has someone close to help me out... . I'm looking to rip the trans out hopefully in march or april as the snow starts melting... . Or my other option is to sell mine cheap for parts and go and find a nice 6 speed truck... ... . :-laf..... decisions... ... decisions... ... . HAHAHA Got to love these trucks... ... ... .

FWIW, although shipping is what I do for a living, it's not too hard to deal with for a regular joe. Find a shop that is willing and competent to install a trans they didn't build (your builder can probably recommend one). You buy the trans, the builder puts it in a special transmission container, selects a carrier and deliver it to your office, shop or the end of your driveway. You put your old trans back in the box, attach the paperwork that the builder included with the new trans, and call the carrier to request a pickup. I've done this with Suncoast and BTS (a popular builder of Ford trannys) with great results.

Several friends have told me the same as you in that shipping is no big deal. . I think I have in my mind that I would have to do some crazy rigging to tie the trans to a pallet or something and then my luck the core would get damaged on the way back to the rebuilder... I'll see what happens as I weigh my options. . I actually just bought a super clean,low miles 2003 quad cab 3500 duallie with a nv5600 trans... So I think I will ordering a trans and then selling my truck..... No more autos for me.....

Nope, the transmission will come to you in a custom-made crate (most likely a form-fitted heavy plastic one), and all you do is bolt yours to the built-in retainers and secure the lid.



Piece of cake!



A properly-built automatic will make your truck a lot nicer to drive (nicer than your stock trans and imho nicer than a manual), and should last a few hundred thousand miles, while costing little more than a garden-variety rebuild. You might decide to keep the truck! See if anyone on the boards has a truck similar to yours, but with a nice transmission, nearby, and take a ride...



edit: oh, since you already have the DTT valve body and convertor, you already know 99% of what a good auto trans feels like...

Thanks for the info... . I'll have to look into them after I pick-up my new to me 2003 duallie... . Or maybe I'll part out the truck... . It needs alot of other work, plus it is rotting pretty good in both doors.....
