Anyone know when the first trans service is due on a 48RE. MY damn owners manual is MIA and I'm going in for some work and my truck has 16k on it. So I'm wondering if I should service the trans while it's there.

At 16K servicing the rear end is a good idea. Not too expensive and you get a good, close up inspection of the gears and an opportunity to see if there are any metal shavings at the bottom of the pumpkin. If you are considering switching over to Amsoil or another synthetic this is the time to do it. Just make sure they resuse the OEM rubber gasket, and not something that gets squeezed out of a tube. After reading the thread where a service tech put RTV or something similar on the cover I mentioned it to my dealer and they noted on the work order not to use the stuff. For what it's worth, I didn't notice any metal, and the gears looked like they just came out of the box, except they weren't covered in varnish.
