I have a 2002 2500 quad cab 4x4 with 4. 10LS. It seems that the 1st to 2nd shift is not right. Under acceleration, 1st gear seems to "hold" too long BEFORE it decides to shift into 2nd. Is this normal, or should I install a shift kit or go back to the stealer and have them check it?

I drove a 2003 Chevy with the Duramax/Allison and that transmission shifts awesome! No hesistation before shifting in that powertrain!!

Thanks

Steve

There should be no hesitation from 1st to 2nd, more than likely just a minor fix, as much as I hate to say this, take it back to the dealer or you will void your warranty by fixing it yourself.

I have a 2001, 2500 quad cab, 4X4 with 4. 10LS also and I have noticed exactly the same thing. I wouldn't call it hesitation, the transmission just stays in 1st gear for too long under medium to high acceleration. When it finally does shift, it doesn't appear to be slipping. My theory is that the shift point is set too high for the 4. 10 rear. The lower gear ratio lets the engine spool up faster. Please let me know if the dealer is able to change this behavior. I am considering the Emjay transmission controller http://www.emjay-eng.com/emstratcon.html but it is new and I am waiting for the reviews before putting out the $$'s.

Ken, you are right!! It just rev's until you back off the gas a hair, then it shifts... it doesn't exactly slip, just shifts way later than it should!!

Steve, let us know what the dealer does for you. I would say to try and adjust the TV cable forward and see if this helps. It sounds like it is just out of adjustment as this can cause this problem.

I had been having the same problem , with the trans hanging in 1st gear, only on occasion and if I stopped and restarted the truck it was okay. Just today it is sticking in first gear and the reset doesn't work. It seems to only shift now when it is good and ready. I guess I'll have to go to the dealer on Monday. I hope it is just a computer problem/adjustment. I guess they will probably have a fit and give me hard time about my Banks smartlock.

Like pcarlson said, "try adjusting your TV (throttle valve) cable. I'm 99. 99% sure it controls the 1-2 shift. There are about 20? little detentes or notches on the end for adjusting. The cable for adjusting is under the black plasitic box on the front right side of the motor, when looking at it from the front or your truck. Try moving it (the cable) forward or have the dealer or any reputable transmission shop show you how. It does not take much of an adjustment to change the shift points by a few hundred RPM's. After having a Trans-Go shift kit put in I made several minor adjustments to get it to my liking.

If is reving to high, the aforementioned will help. If it is "hanging up" at a certain RPM before shifting then the above might not remedy the situation.

FWIW: In first gear my truck runs up to 3100'ish then shift into second with no hesitation, second gear to third around 2800-2900 and into fourth around 2700-2900.

Good luck , I wish I had the 4. 10's!!!!

Just an update on my problem. The kick down spring on my smartlock was sticking, keeping the pressure to high. The dealer actually figured out the problem, fixed it and only charged me an hour. Really figured they were going to take a look at my Mods and tell me it was my problem. Fortunately not the case:) Running smooth again!

Should the cable be moved forward towards the firewall or towards the front of the truck?? Which way?
