Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) High RPM stumble

pulling about 7000 lbs and while on the throttle pretty good my trans shutters. what causes this and what kind of damage can be caused if this continually happens??

This is generally the TC not able to stay lcoked. If OD is on and rpm drops much below 2k rpm it will happen. If that's not it get trans serviced, in most cases this can correct the problem. Bad fluid causes shudder. If neither it's transmission replace time.

transgo TFOD shift kit, or tfod jr. kit might help. increases holding pressure to tq convertor clutches. Also improved, quicker shifting will produce less slippage and heat.

True fully I think you would waste your money on any transmission shift kit, in an effort to help with the slipping. Pretty much once it has started to slip, it goes pretty fast. Same as a clutch in a manual transmission. The heat destroys the friction disk and the surface it rest against. When you feel that shudder, especially under load, there is alot of heat built-up in a very small time. Thats the reason the fluid starts to get burnt and stink, that heat is also transfered to the fluid, but it is to much for it. The heat generated is just to much for the system to cool quickly, so the fluid burns, and when it does it coats the parts in a film that results in them sticking. It probably doesn't sound like much, but that slipping Torque Converter will kill the transmission very quickly. The mating surfaces go fast they have you other option, the heat warps and glazes the linings. Behind that is the transmission's oil pump, it picks up that same heat and and will eventually fail as well. My transmission started slipping while towing, first it was only on hills where you got on it. Then a little more slipping, till it would slip hills or not, if you accelerated to fast. I replaced it before it broke, but it wouldn't take another tow. Though it might have lived for a while without towing.

I don't share y-knot's opinion. I have had good results prolonging a couples of transmissions that were mis behaving, by doing just that. shift improver kit and new fluid.

The shudder you feel, may just be electrical noise. You need a good filter. It won't hurt it to try.

Do a search on it and read up.

Are you battery posts clean?

i just had the trans serviced 30k miles ago i had a custom built torque converter a shift kit and straight cut gears put in it ill try a trans flush and see what happens if that does not work my trans shop is gettin a call since it still under warranty

watch the tach and speedo climb together,in lockup, does the tach jump ahead of the speedo when it shudders> if so you are likely slipping a clutch or the tc. My bet is the Tc is slipping. Also you said you "just had it serviced" 30K ago,30K it a lot of miles for a hi performance trans behind a turned up engine, unless your running full synthetic,or all hiway miles, you are past its useful life if you were using more than stock power, and running it hard. I service all my trucks every 15-20K at the most, all DTT trannys. Fluid is cheap, and none of us have anything close to stock power.
