Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Trans starts out in 3rd gear

My transmission will not shift into 1st gear when I come to a stop. It seems to start out in 2nd or 3rd. As I accelerate and depress the throttle, it will shift into 1st then progress normally through the gears. If I use the shift lever, the transmission starts out in 1st gear and shifts as I move the lever. Sounds like the TV cable, but adjusting it did not fix the problem. Should I shorten it to 1/4in. play or look for some other problem.

Sounds like a limp mode problem. There is a way to have the check engine light flash codes, but I'm not sure how many times you have to turn the key on & off - I think it's 5 times within 2 or 3 seconds. Governor pressure that doesn't go below 1. 5psi at idle will cause this problem. Good luck...

It's on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds. Count the number of times it flashes (once every second indicates 1,2,3,... ) Then there will be a 4 second break, then it will flash again, write these down, they signify numbers.
