Hi new member trying to find out information on putting an overdrive unit off an 1996 onto an 1992, the 1996 is a 4x4 tailshaft the 1992 is 2wd tailshaft. I am trying to convert my1992 2wd to 4wd. I have 1996 auto overdrive with 4x4 housing. what do I do for the rear seal the 1996 won't work  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tail Shaft & Oil Seal

If I am reading your post right, you want to use your 92 tail shaft in the 96 tranfer case, but the oil seal does not fit. Why not use the 96 tail shaft and modify the drive shaft to suit. Since the stock drive shaft for your truck will be too long anyway just substitute the yoke from the front end of the 96 drive shaft when you shorten it. If you just want an oil seal of a different size, post the id, od and thickness you need and I will look it up for you.

Hope this Helps

Good to have you as a new member.

First off we need to know which trans you got hold of. The early 96's used a 47rh trans which was hydraulically controlled. It has a rectangular 3 pin connector behind the shift lever. The late 96's used a 47re trans which was somewhat computer controlled and used a governor pressure solenoid and pressure switch which the computer uses to create a governor pressur to make the trans shift. It has a round 10? pin connector behind the shift lever and an output speed sensor in the tailshaft housing.

If you have the 47rh go to the link below to see the instructions I posted when I installed the 47rh in my truck.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the help

Thanks Paul Herioux what I have is a 4spd automatic in my 1992 D250 2wd. I took an overdrive( just overdrive not complete trans with 4x4 output shaft)off an 1996 47RH 4spd automatic 4wd and bolted on my 1992 4SPD automatic in place of the 2WD overdrive output shaft. when I put it in gear trans fluid came out weep hole I put RTV in weep hole seems fine . will the trans fluid still be ok at that level is my main concern. the level it has to reach to go back to the pan is the bearing. Thanks for your help . I am still building truck so won't know for sure till I finish how it will work out. Glad to see I'm not the only person with this problem. I talked with local dodge dealership they are clueless to anything other than direct replacement.

Thanks again your replys helped alot

Anytime I can be of help just ask.

If you have the fluid level at the full mark on the stick while idling in nuetral with trans warm you'll be fine.

Not all of us dealer techs are totally clueless, maybe that's why I'm no longer at the dealer.
