Transmission Oil Hot light?!?

Interesting find while changing my oil

i am planning on getting a deep pan but i put my gauges in and tired of the trans temp not working. So i plugged it into the first plug on the passengerside of the transmission. I know that i am prolly not getting an accurate measurement but i want to make sure that i am not hurting my transmission in any way by placing the probe into it. i used the first one because it looked to be the lowest imo but is there any reason i should switch it are just take it out until i get a deep pan or mass diesel's line??

thanks

From what I've seen / read the best is in the hot line going to cooler , thats the hottest [ you can react to it getting hot , faster ] the next best is the pan , the case may be the worst because not much flow , the gauge is reading the case temp. [ so your waiting for heat soak to get a reading - if theres a problem its the last place to get it ]

I have a picture on my reader rig of which port to use if you want to use a port in the trans, I currently have the probe in my PML deep pan. I saw almost no difference in readings going from the test port in the trans to the deep pan.

Depending on what port you used, you run the risk of destroying or severely hurting the transmission. If it is the port I am thinking of, it has a piston inside the case that can contact the probe, mash the probe so you can't get it out, mangle the piston, which could lead to ruining the case.

Best bet is never use the pressure ports for temp probes. Use the front output line to the trans cooler, eithe by splicing into the rubber portion of the line or a replacement line.

FYI, don't let anybody tell you there is no difference between the pan, the cooler line, and/or trans case. The difference can be over 100 degrees on a hard pull and the reaction is much faster in the cooler line. :)

There may be a difference between the cooler lines and the pan or one of the test ports but I have run both in the pan and the rear test port and there is no noticable difference between those two.

well i just took the probe out and it was bent a little bit somethingi was surely hitting it i only drove about 40 miles like that. Should i be concerned that i did damage to my transmission are i shouldn't worry about it

thanks

Not disagreeing with you. Just pointing out too often this gets extended to the cooler line which is incorrect.

The good news is you got the probe out before it really messed it up. The bad news, there is a pretty good chance you did some damage to the piece it was hitting. :eek:

The stock pieces are not very strong and can easily be hurt, plus, if the piece breaks or is damaged it may damage the bore it runs in and trash the case. :{

If it was my truck, I'd have it pulled and checked, but, my luck is lousy when it comes to things like this. Yours may be better. :)

well you know that we prolly are in the same boat cause if something can go wrong it will. i mean that is for me, but i think i am going to order me a deep pan and change the fluid and see what it looks like and see if there is any shavings in it. wish me luck

and thanks for all the help i did pull it out after your post and it is hard to tell if there is any damage now but if i would have left it in a long time no doubt there would have been not the ideal situation i would want to be in with only 2700 miles on my truck lol
