Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Trans temp rising...normal?

On my 96' when I'm driving normally, down the interstate, or around town as long as I'm moving constantly the trans temp stays around 125*F and usually no higher.

As soon as I stop in traffic, or put it in park and sit, the trans temp goes up. This makes sense, I was just wondering what the "safe" temperature is.

Its never been above 175*F and it comes down pretty quickly when I start driving again.

My 98 runs between 125 and 150 on the highway, and I run up to 185 stop and go, It has been doing this since I bought it 2 years ago, and I just had it opened up last month, and everything checked out.

The temperatures you are describing are pretty normal if you are not towing or heavily loaded. Even towing my trailer, I seldom see it above 200*.

When it does get that high it is usually because I have had to unlock the TC to get egt down. Following that, I'll get it below 200* as quickly as I can.

200 seems pretty high, I guess for short periods it can't be too harmful though.

This truck hasn't towed anything since I've owned it, other than some furniture, but that doesn't really count.

I'm getting a full billet Suncoast TripleLoc soon, so I'm not really worried about this trans since it won't be in service much longer, and I know I won't have to worry about temperatures with the Suncoast. Especially with the size earth trans pan that comes with it.

I feel much better now that I know above 175 won't kill it too fast.
