Trans. temp sending unit question

Can a transmission temp sending unit be installed in one of the test ports on a 2001. 5? I did a search but all of the posts I found were talking about 95 - 97 trucks, I didn't know if they are the same. I plan on buying the cooler line with the fitting later on down the road.

I don't think it is advised for the long term.



There was a thread a while ago started by Bill from DTT "Don't do it this way" that included pictures of a temp sending unit installed in the pass side, front most test port. There is a piston that moves in this cylinder, I think it is the accumulator area and there was some concern over the temp sender contacting/binding the piston. That port is located on the front pass side of the transmission on a rounded surface, very close to where the dipstick enters the pan.



Call DTT and ask for there opinion, I would feel comfortable doing whatever they recommended. When I had an auto truck I installed the cooler line with the built in port and removed the drainback valve in the fluid to fluid cooler.

Yeah, I remember that picture. It was ugly. Go with the cooler line. It's the best way to go.

Guys,Put my sensor in the pan-after installing double-deep..... I think we sometimes can't see forest for the trees. Guess what I'm trying to say is that none of these gauges are that percise, what we are trying to see is appox. temp and make sure it isn't going to the moon... my two cents worth...

There is a big difference in pan temps (fluid already cooled) and temps measured in the hot line going to the cooler.

Yes, the line will show you quicker if there's a problem. But the pan is also a helpful reading to have. I plan to get a double deep pan and would like to put another sender there to have another place to monitor. Since I only have one right now, the cooler line is my choice for the most relevant reading.

Banks instructions say to put it in the rear most passenger side test port as a secondary location. SNOKING

I silver soildered(sp?) a fitting on my stock pan. It seems to work well but might have a little cooler reading in that location. Comes in handy when draining trans fluid. It is in rear driver side of the pan. If you install it like I did be mindful that it has clearence of moving parts in the trans. brian

The MOPAR deep dish pan places a drain plug and a temp sender right in the pan. Can not be that inaccuarate of a reading if MOPAR Performance puts it here. My opinion anyway, I know the reading will be different but it will still give the driver a good idea of what's going on.
